8Bitdo is set to introduce a brand-new controller for the mobile gaming market with its 8Bitdo FlipPad, which is set to debut at CES 2026, and it takes a very different approach from what we have seen before.
While 8Bitdo has produced mobile controllers in the past, those typically followed a familiar design where a phone sits between two grips, mimicking a traditional controller layout. The FlipPad moves away from that convention entirely. Instead, users can slot in either an Apple iPhone or an Android device, transforming the setup into a compact, Game Boy-style handheld that’s perfect for vertical gaming.
The idea makes a lot of sense, actually. Modern smartphones are now just as powerful, if not more so depending on the model, than many dedicated retro handhelds released in recent years. Devices such as the Analogue Pocket and the ModRetro Chromatic have shown there is still strong demand for nostalgic hardware designs, and the FlipPad appears to tap directly into that appeal while leveraging hardware many people already own.
As mentioned, the 8Bitdo FlipPad will make its first public appearance at CES 2026. If we make it out to the show, we will be sure to check it out and hopefully get some hands-on time with the device.
