The Story

The world needs a hero… and so, the peaceful housekeeping robot, Rock, was converted into Mega Man to bring a wave of blue love across the world… when he’s not helping Dr. Light build plastic model kits and keeping the U.N. Chief on hold while he does…

Little Mega Man is a reimagining of the Mega Man game franchise as a comedic manga that doesn’t pull any punches whatsoever. The manga is rather episodic until it introduces its main plot point… how Dr. Wily came to hate Dr. Light. For those who played the video games, you know that Dr. Wily hated Dr. Light for getting all the credit for his work so he stole Light’s original robots and reprogrammed them. Here in Little Mega Man, that story is thrown completely out the window!

Here, Dr. Wily and Dr. Light were in the same class in college. Dr. Light used his cunning to allow his professor to hand the reigns of the class over to Dr. Light. When Light took control, he made sure to pair up with all of the girls for group projects leaving Wily and five other boys to work by themselves! This caused them to form the Men’s Six and vow revenge on Dr. Light, essentially, c***blocking them—all while doing it while wearing a t-shirt that depicts a cheeseburger and the words “More Please” on it!

Whenever one of the Men’s Six attacks, Dr. Light indulges their whimsy until he tells Mega Man to open fire with the Mega Buster and end things instantly. The threat isn’t over but can Mega Man rise to the challenge!? (Of course, he can.)

Characters

Dr. Light… okay… this is the central source of all of the manga’s comedy. Gone is the peace-loving Dr. Light (sort of) and in his place is a bumbling oaf who is more off his rocker than Dr. Wily. Examples? Sure…

When Rush gets broken, he slaps a helmet on a real dog, calls him Organic Rush, and pairs Mega Man with him. Organic Rush proves to be useless so instead of fixing Rush, he feels that dogs are on a downward trend and it’s all about cats now so Organic Rush II is just a cat with a helmet slapped on its head, too. Dr. Light even begins to feed pigeons in hopes of making an Organic Beat one day, too.

One of Light’s new robot masters is Comfy Chair Man… a chair that gets off on you sitting in its lap. It really gets “excited” when it starts to massage you after you lean into the chair. If you get up, Comfy Chair Man will lock onto you and follow you around, seeking more attention…

Yes, as mentioned above, he once told Roll to keep the U.N. Chief on hold during a time of crisis because he was busy putting together a plastic model kit, he dressed like a biker to improve the image of scientists everywhere for a talk show he was scheduled to be on, he refused to help Bad Box Art Mega Man because American Dr. Light called him a Turbovirgin, he gave Rush the ability to talk but Rush is just an apathetic dog who couldn’t care less about anything, and he upgraded Mega Man’s slide ability by spraying his butt with an ultra-slippery coating causing him to slide endlessly across the entire city.

And I’m just scratching the surface here…

Mega Man is a bit naïve in this series. He just does what Dr. Light tells him but is a bit too compassionate for his own good. He was too busy protecting Cat Rush to notice he fell into Fire Man’s trap, since Organic Dog Rush was useless, he ended up getting defeated by Dr. Wily, but whenever Dr. Light commands him to blast away, he doesn’t hesitate! Also, he gets to feel boobs for the first time in his life and he likes how soft they are.

Roll is the only one of the cast with a voice of reason. She’s constantly trying to get Dr. Light to change his ways and smarten him up, she offers useful advice to Mega Man, questions everything, and tries to make sense of it all!

Proto Man was turned into a character that can only communicate via whistling… he’s also very philosophical in his ramblings, questioning things like life and harmony.

Auto questions his own sexuality thanks to the green bulbs on his chest (yes, you read that correctly and yes, this is a real plot point)

Final Thoughts

I’ve been finished with the first volume for nearly 20 minutes now and I’m still smiling. The hilarity of this series is something I wasn’t prepared for. I thought it was just going to be some light family humor but no… they went for the throat and twisted Mega Man into something more adult-oriented. With a series like this, you do not go into it expecting accuracy… at all… and there is none to be had.

I think the gag that broke me was when they acknowledged Bad Box Art Mega Man and treated America as a whole other world. We got to see American Ice Man, American Elec Man, and others. When Roll questioned why American Mega Man used a pistol instead of a Mega Buster, Dr. Light’s reply was “That’s because he’s American.” I lost it.

While this can be enjoyed on its own… you almost have to be a fan of Mega Man to appreciate the humor here. Some jokes require a bit of Mega Man knowledge but if you have that, this is going to be one of the greatest manga series you’ll read that will catch you completely off guard… I know because that’s what it did to me and I’m not upset one bit. I need more… and I need more of this now.
