Larian Studios Made Baldur’s Gate 3 To Break Through The “Glass Ceiling” Above Them

...it worked!

There are many times in game development when a studio feels the need to “get to the next level” to really show what they can do. For Larian Studios, they were an indie company that was known for doing incredible RPGs, and delivering on great Kickstarter rewards that helped fund their games. However, CEO Swen Vincke knew that the team needed to be seen in a “bigger light” and that they could make true AAA titles that everyone could adore and praise Larian for making. And that’s where Baldur’s Gate 3 came in.

In an interview with EDGE Magazine (thank you, GamesRadar+, for posting it!), Vincke noted exactly what he was looking for to help the team reach new heights, and it was a very slim list of titles to choose from:

“I felt like there was a glass ceiling that we wouldn’t be able to break through unless we had triple-A production values, budget, marketing, all the triple-A things. It would have been Ultima, it would have been Fallout, it would have been Baldur’s Gate. There was not a lot to choose from.”

Yet, they absolutely made the right choice, and Baldur’s Gate 3 not only sold incredibly well, but it won numerous honors, including “Game of the Year” multiple times over, including at The Game Awards (where Vincke gave a memorable speech because he was allowed to do so this time around…) and Larian Studios is now praised an incredible developer who values quality and fan feedback to help make its titles better.
