Mario & Luigi Brothership Team Had About 100 Different Names For Game

As long as it "connects" in the end, right?

Have you been enjoying Mario & Luigi Brothership since it came out last month? If so, then you’re making the teams at Nintendo and Acquire very happy, as they put a lot of time and energy into the new game. In the third part of the dev team interview that Nintendo has been posting, they talked a lot about the true theme of the game: Connection. After all, the Mario Bros have to connect lost parts of a continent, reunite with friends, and help the people of Concordia become whole again.

During the interview, they pointed out that the literal “Brothership” of Shipshape Island grows in both look and in residents because of the players bringing the islands together. Acquire Director Haruyuki Ohashi noted:

Thanks to Mario and Luigi, or better put, thanks to the player, Shipshape Island grows livelier, and its residents become happier. We wanted players to feel that outcome of their actions. I thought it would be nice to give players the experience of overcoming challenges thanks to a push from the people with whom they formed bonds on the connected islands. I wanted players to feel the joy of being supported by someone and the bonds that are created when everyone helps each other.

Yet, ironically, the “connection” between the game’s name and the team took a bit longer. Tomoki Fukushima of Nintendo revealed:

“The subtitle for this game is “Brothership”. We decided on this after brainstorming over 100 options with Acquire. I think it fits the game’s theme perfectly.”

Indeed! And it’s actually the first time both the English and Japanese versions of the game shared the same name.
