Gato Strikes His Way Into Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

By Kevin KellyDecember 21, 2024
Fatal Fury City of the Wolves

SNK released a trailer for Gato’s return to Southtown in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. He’s definitely back and hungry to get vengeance.

Gato is as enigmatic as they come. With his new affliction, you’d think it’d slow him down. Apparently not. In his Mark of the Wolves ending, Gato was attacked by his father, Gao. Thanks to this, Gato seems to be somewhat blind and constantly keeping his eyes closed in the trailer. Though the story states that he’s worried about his moves dulling, the trailer tells an alternate side to this story.

It appears that Gato has gained some new tools, including a one-hit reversal that is distinct from his break move. At one point, there seems to be a stance change after the counterattack from a special move, but it’s unclear what options are available once the stance concludes. So far, it appears to be a back-turn move. Gato’s Shin-ga with multiple inputs has made a return, along with his Ryuu-Ga and Retsu-Ga supers. However, his Kou-Ga invisible fireball follow-up attack doesn’t seem to be present in the gameplay footage yet, or it might not have been utilized here. This omission affects his somewhat unsafe mid-range game. The original move that sets up Kou-Ga, Fuu-Ga, is featured in the trailer, though. Gato still seems to retain his identity as a rushdown character with a strong ground game.

Gato’s stage seems to be different from his first appearance in a more darker area. Southtown can be seen from there. The cloudy stage fits Gato well; the warrior now does not rely on sight to push blows onto unsuspecting foes. Wukong and Boruto’s Cory Yee will be voicing Gato.

The Final Four of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

With only four characters left in the base 17-man roster, speculation points toward either another returning competitor from Mark of the Wolves or a character from Fatal Fury’s origins. The criminal Freeman from Mark of the Wolves seems like an obvious choice, yet Jae Hoon—Dong Hwan’s brother—has not been revealed alongside Kim Kaphwan’s kin. With Mai already confirmed, this could be the perfect opportunity for Hokutomaru to join the roster and spar with his fellow Shiranui clansperson. We’ve yet to see the final boss as well. According to SNK, some veteran faces from the series are slated to appear in City of the Wolves. And who knows? Maybe Cristiano Ronaldo will “kick” his way into the fray, too.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be available on April 24th for PlayStation 4 | 5, Xbox Series X | S, and Steam. Preordering digitally nets the 3-day early access. The game will come with Season Pass 1 DLC automatically, which brings Street Fighter VI’s Ken and Chun-Li to visit…err fight.
