Legendary Composer Joe Hisaishi Cracks Down on Music Copyright Theft

By Josh PiedraMay 8, 2024

When you think of anime composers, modern fans will cite the holy trinity of Yoko Kanno, Yuki Kajiura, and Hiroyuki Sawano; however, one of the legends that paved the way was Studio Ghibli’s Joe Hisaishi who composed scores for films such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and many others.

While his status will always remain as a respected authority in the music world he has taken to social media to ask that we show him that level of respect by not using his music without any authorization as you can see in the post below.

Joe Hisaishi

What is interesting to note is the statement about concerts using his music and rearranging their scores. Most copyrights will allow this as an alteration, even in the slightest, makes it different than the original and is enough to bypass it but Joe seems to be clamping down on that as well which could have bigger implications than what is revealed on the surface.

Looks like every concert is going to have to file for permission from here on out but no matter how this may seem, the truth is that Joe Hisaishi is within his rights to protect his music.
