CoMix Wave Releases Short Anime Film Hatsukoi no Nioi

By Josh PiedraMay 20, 2024

CoMix Wave Films has released a brand-new animated short movie titled Hatsukoi no Nioi (The Smell of First Love). The film is directed by Maho Takagi whose previous works include Weathering with You, SSSS.DYNAZENON, Evaneglion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, and Suzume. This short film is her debut as a director. Sakura Fujiwara composed the music for the short.

CoMix Wave Films is also known for director Makoto Shinkai’s works such as 5 Centimeters per Second, your name., The Garden of Words, Voices of a Distant Star, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and many others.

Maho Takagi commented on the project:

“I had definitely wanted to portray Sakura-san’s fragile but moody and strong-willed singing voice in my work someday,” said Takagi. “Thanks to this song, which contains all of Sakura-san’s good qualities, I was able to make both the video and the music dazzling beyond my expectations. I would be glad that the video, along with Sakura-san’s singing voice, could heal your heart even if only a little.”

Sakura Fujiwara also had this to say:

“I wanted to gently and tenderly embrace the lovely girl with the ever-changing expression that Maho-san depicts. I would be happy if you could feel the smell and temperature of first love with me, which makes your heart prickle when you remember it, but also makes you want to touch it again.”

The song released digitally on May 20 with physical copies shipping in July.
