Combo Breaker 2024: Street Fighter 6 Akuma and Season 2 Patch Will Be Legal

By Kevin KellyMay 18, 2024

The upcoming fighting game tournament Combo Breaker 2024, is right around the corner, taking place from May 24 – 26, and it’s been decided that Akuma will be playable for the event alongside the Season 2 build of game Street Fighter 6.  While Akuma’s arrival is May 22, this only gives Combo Breaker 2024 participants less than two days to get used to the character. As with any character, his coming will require another balance patch to be applied to the game for Season 2. Capcom Pro Tour events would follow certain rules, which would be a potential roadblock for TOs.

CAPCOM’s video game Street Fighter 6 for PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, and (1) all updates, patches, and stages released by the tournament date, and (2) character packs released at least 7 days prior to the tournament date.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the case. Combo Breaker’s organizers decided to put this decision into the hands of where it mattered the most – the players. The players answered the call at about 81% votes in favor of still going ahead.

Street Fighter 6 at CB2024:

The patch releasing May 22, 2024 will be used. Akuma will be legal. While CB is displeased with this patch's release date, we polled our registered players & over 81% of them want it run.

We hope this will be a novel & fun way to experience CB2024. pic.twitter.com/DwCXZNmNYw

It’s Time To Train For Combo Breaker

That alone does not give much time to retool strategies based on the changes or time with the game at that state to be prepared fairly. Regardless of it being the fact that Akuma’s toolset has some changes, but familiar moves we all know and possibly love to not get caught with. However, Combo Breaker’s Twitter stated that they are working with the Chicagoland Organizers for a casual meetup on May 23rd at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel to give players a place to practice with the latest Street Fighter 6 build. The space will be open from 12 pm to 1 am.

To help players quickly learn the patch & Akuma, CB2024 is working with Chicagoland organizers to host casuals on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

Starting at 12 PM (Noon), Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel spaces will be filled with setups to let you practice the latest version of SF6. pic.twitter.com/vb2iBT6Fvc

The move itself has even Combo Breaker’s Event Director, Rick “The Hadou” Thiher, confused at the result. Street Fighter 6 is already nearly a year out, so maybe this will raise the stakes of this offline Capcom Pro Tour event even more amazing this year.

I’m still dumbfounded y’all want this. May the weekend prove a memorable one for the history books.

Brackets, schedule, and activities out tomorrow for CB2024. https://t.co/b6IKTKAu95

Street Fighter 6 is available on PlayStation 4|5  Xbox Series X S, and PC (Steam).
