KENSHI YONEZU Debuts FINAL FANTASY XVI Theme Song Music Video

By Josh PiedraJuly 10, 2023

Milan Records debuts the official music video to global J-pop superstar KENSHI YONEZU’s official theme song to FINAL FANTASY XVI entitled “TSUKI WO MITEITA – MOONGAZING” – WATCH HERE. Available everywhere now, the track was chosen as the official theme song to the sixteenth installment in Square Enix’s iconic Final Fantasy gaming franchise, which was released this past Thursday to rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Both an avid gamer and a huge fan of Final Fantasy, Kenshi Yonezu wrote “Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing” specifically for the hugely anticipated video game. In addition to the track itself, Yonezu also personally created the track’s cover artwork, which features Torgal, the companion wolf that travels with Final Fantasy XVI’s main character Clive Rosfield.

Of the track, KENSHI YONEZU says, “Words cannot express the impact Final Fantasy has had on my life. I never thought or imagined that I would ever receive an opportunity like this. I wrote this song especially for this game. Thank you.”

“When I found out that we’d be able to work with Yonezu-san, I was not only surprised, but overjoyed,” adds NAOKI YOSHIDA, a producer of Final Fantasy XVI. “I’m a big fan of Yonezu’s work, and I know that he has a passion for creating music that resonates across the generations, so I was sure that he’d be able to capture the world, the story, and the themes of FFXVI. He’s not only an amazing artist, but also an avid gamer and an FF fan, so please look forward to hearing his theme song!”

The Final Fantasy series is a Japan-born role-playing video game, which, since the release of the first game in 1987, has enjoyed high acclaim around the globe with its state-of-the-art visual technology, unique worldview, and rich storylines.  It has sold a total of over 173 million units and downloads to date.  The series marked its 35th anniversary in 2022 and now sees its latest numbered title, Final Fantasy XVI, hitting the market.

Gearing up for the new theme song, Yonezu unveiled a series of never-before-seen artist photos, which together comprise a visual story embodying the sublime vibe of the track. The photos were taken by videographer, film director, and photographer Tomokazu Yamada, who produced Yonezu’s music video for his breakout single “Lemon,” which recently reached 800 million views, as well as the visual for his latest single “LADY”.
