Redfall to launch at 30FPS on Xbox, 60FPS to be added at a later date

As you may or may not already know, Bethesda and Arkane Studios have revealed that there will be some limitations when Redfall launches for the Xbox. According to a tweet from the official Redfall Twitter account, the game will be stuck at 30FPS at launch.

Redfall is launching on Xbox consoles with Quality mode only:
Xbox Series X: 4K 30 FPS
Xbox Series S: 1440p 30 FPS
60 FPS Performance mode will be added via game update at a later date. pic.twitter.com/NLaGsMbwdW

Redfall on the Xbox Series X will support a 4K resolution at only 30 frames per second at launch. While the Xbox Series S will only support 1440p at 30 frames per second at launch, secondly, it was announed that the performance mode that will run at 60 frames per second on both consoles, will be patched in at a later date. As you can imagine, this news hasn’t been sitting well with those awaiting the release of Redfall.

  • Xbox Series S: 1440P 30 FPS
  • Xbox Series X: 4K 60FPS
  • (60FPS performance mode to be added via a game update at a later date for both consoles)

As you can imagine, the news has already frustrated those eagerly awaiting the game’s release. Many already claimed that Redfall is dead in the water. Of course, that’s too soon to say, but the move isn’t the best. This decision is a bitter pill to swallow because Redfall was previously showcased at 60 frames per second. Every trailer and the previews were at 60FPS.

Xbox gamers have already seen what happens to games when released without features that should be available from the start, only to have them patched in at an unannounced later date. For a game to be launched on the most powerful gaming console of our time, and to be gimped at just 30 frames per second, doesn’t exactly instill any confidence. And that’s regardless if the gameplay is any good or not.

Honestly, I feel the best move here is to delay Redfall. At least until Arkane is ready to release the game with the performance mode, which provides 60 frames per second, and the quality mode, at 30 frames per second, or drop the 4K altogether, I get that people want 4K. Still, for a shooter to be played at 30 FPS, it’s not a game that I’d like to play – not at that state.

At any rate, it is what it is, but there’s still time for Bethesda and Arkane to reverse this decision. This might happen if enough of the Redfall community voices dissatisfaction regarding this move.

Should Bethesda and Arkane decide to stick to their current plans, I’m not saying it will kill the game, but we likely will see fewer copies of the game being sold. I love Arkane – it is a fantastic game development studio and has shown how much it cares about its games and community throughout the years. Why this came out of the blue doesn’t make any sense.

Redfall launches for the Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 2, 2023. With the release development, are you still looking forward to playing the game? Sound off in the comments!
