Baldur’s Gate 3 is Not a PlayStation Exclusive

During the first PlayStation State of Play of 2023, it was revealed that Larin Studios’ upcoming RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, would also be released on the PlayStation 5, alongside the PC release of August 31, 2023. However, as many people pointed out afterward, there was no announcement regarding an Xbox version of the game.

This upset the Xbox community, as they’ve seen a fair number of RPGs skip their platform of choice for one reason or another. Then we started seeing the PlayStation exclusivity tossed around, and things started getting ugly. However, we all need to pump the brakes, as things aren’t what they seem.

Instead, it was Larin Studio who chose not to announce the Xbox version, due to technical reasons.

As I was checking out the Baldur’s Gate subreddit, as I’ve been proving input and whatnot, being part of the PC early access, I noticed that Larion Studio made a post that explained what is going on and why there was no Xbox version announced… yet.

“Hey all,

Thanks for all the hype and enthusiasm following yesterday’s announcement that Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to PS5 day and date with PC on August 31st!

Xbox players, we’ve seen your questions about if/when you can expect Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox. We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the works for some time, but we have run into some technical issues – particularly with split-screen co-op. We are still working on an Xbox version of BG3, but we’re not yet confident enough to announce it. We don’t like announcing anything until we’re ready, because we don’t want to get peoples hopes up until we’re sure we can deliver.

There’s no platform exclusivity preventing us from releasing BG3 on Xbox day and date, should that be a technical possibility. If and when we do announce further platforms, we want to make sure each version lives up to our standards & expectations. Thanks for understanding!”

So, there you go. There’s no PS5 exclusivity for Baldur’s Gate 3, so you can all relax. Larion Studio wants to make sure that when they release Baldur’s Gate 3 for the Xbox, they want to make sure it’s the best version it can be.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released on August 3, 2023, for the PS5, and the PC version will finally leave early access.
