PlayStation’s DualSense Edge Controller takes on the Xbox Elite and SCUF Controllers

It’s been rumored that PlayStation has been working on its own premium controller, one similar to Xbox’s Elite controller, and today it was revealed. During the Gamescom Opening Night Live, the DualSense Edge, a “high performance” controller, was shown, and it looks impressive.

As mentioned over at the PlayStation Blog, the DualSense Edge will include the same buttons as the original DualSense controller, plus more. Both analog sticks will come with swappable caps, while the rear will include swappable back buttons.  The triggers will include multiple adjustment levels, which is great for playing different games. For example, setting the adjustment to the highest setting will allose those who play first-person shooters to simply tap the trigger instead of it traveling all the way down.

The DualSense Edge will feature the ability to customize your control scheme on the fly, thanks to the software-based customization options. It will also include the ability to save multiple control profiles.

A new button called “Fn” will allow you to swap between your already customized profiles, change in-game volume, and chat volume. This is something I haven’t seen on any custom or premium controller.

There hasn’t been any mention of a larger battery, and I hope that PlayStation also tossed one of those in the new controller. Let’s be honest here, the DualSense controller dies way faster than most of us would like.  I know I’m not a fan of playing my favorite games and seeing “Your controller has a low charge.” A larger battery would keep many gamers playing for longer.

PlayStation hasn’t revealed when the DualSense Edge will be available in retail or a price as of yet. Hopefully, the pricing aligns with the Xbox Elite controller, which is priced at $180, and not the SCUF controllers, which are priced as much as $200 and above.
