INU-OH Soundtrack to MASAAKI YUASA’s Animated Rock Opera Out Now

By Josh PiedraAugust 8, 2022

Milan Records releases INU-OH (ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK), an album of music from visionary director Masaaki Yuasa’s latest animated feature about a duo of classical Japanese dance theater performers who take medieval Japan by storm when they begin infusing their traditional performances with a taste of glam-rock. Available everywhere now, the album features both instrumental score music and original Japanese vocal tracks written by pioneering composer, multi-instrumentalist and turntablist OTOMO YOSHIHIDE. A consummate artist whose experience includes everything from experimental noise music and improvised jazz to contemporary classical and avant-garde pop, Otomo Yoshihide was well-equipped to capture the anachronistic quality of the film’s music, which ranges from traditional score numbers featuring the classical Japanese biwa to modern rock operettas with vocals by Inu-Oh character voice actors Avu-chan (of QUEEN BEE) and Mirai Moriyama. Originally making its debut at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, Inu-Oh debuts in U.S. theaters on Friday, August 12 from GKIDS.

Also available alongside the soundtrack is an original song from acclaimed Japanese band QUEEN BEE entitled “INU-HIME” – listen here. Written and performed by QUEEN BEE vocalist and the voice of Inu-Oh, Avu-chan, the track was directly inspired by Avu-chan’s work on the film and arrives alongside a music video featuring Kenjiro Tsuda, who voices the character of Inu-Oh’s father in the movie – watch here. Of the track and video, Avu-chan says, “I am very happy to have been able to write and create this song. I am grateful to have Mr. Tsuda [Kenjiro Tsuda] appear in the music video, who I worked with on the animated film Inu-Oh. I feel a sense of gratitude and strong conviction running through me from the depths of my heart to the ends of my body. All that remains is for you to listen and watch.”
