Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a huge build upon the movie that we got of Sonic the Hedgehog. Luckily the theater numbers also help with demonstrating that to us as well.

We got a press release that also now states the numbers as of today that we can post for the worldwide numbers.
“Today, SEGA CORPORATION announced that Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has earned a total of $331.64 million in global box office sales, surpassing the $319.71 million record from the previous Sonic the Hedgehog film, and making it the top-grossing film based on a video game franchise of all time. “
This means that Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has surpassed the total ticket sales worldwide of the original film from 2020. For those who are fans of the original storylines of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Adventure there is a lot of callbacks and references to these games from the second film. I believe it is because of all this video game love the movie has, that has given Sonic the Hedgehog 2 the love from its fanbase. The first movie was good but not a whole lot of references to previous game stories. The second movie is chock full of references to the game series and the stories that are in them.
If you are a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog I would recommend watching this movie and seeing just why there is so much hype attached to it.
