Surprising No One, Elden Ring Surpasses 12 Million Copies Sold

By Keith MitchellMarch 16, 2022
Elden Ring - Look at that view

Ok, let’s not act surprised that Fromsoftware’s and Bandai’s recent title, Elden Ring, has managed to sell over 12 million copies. I mean, has anyone even heard of this game? Ok, let’s be honest here, yes, the game is fantastic, and yes, I fully expected the game to sell. Yet, I fully didn’t expect the game to do this well, given that it is still a “Soulslike” game.  But, doing 12 million copies sold already in less than a month? Damn, those are some impressive numbers. Major kudos to everyone involved in bringing this flagship title to life.

President and CEO/Director of FromSoftware and the father of Dark Souls/Demon’s Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, had nothing but positive things to say regarding this achievement.

It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring. I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team. Elden Ring is based on a mythological story written by George R. R. Martin. We hope players enjoy a high level of freedom when adventuring through its vast world, exploring its many secrets, and facing up to its many threats. Thank you for your continued support.

While Yasuo Miyakawa, President and CEO of BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc, was equally impressive and humbled how fast Elden Ring managed to hit 12 million copies sold.

I would like to use this opportunity to give my thanks to all our fans who have brought Elden Ring into their gaming life. I am very proud to have been involved in bringing such a wonderful and fantastic game to life with FromSoftware, under the guidance of Director Miyazaki, and with George R. R. Martin. Much effort was placed into creating Elden Ring in order to exceed the expectations of our fans worldwide. With a similar goal, we will continue our efforts in expanding the brand beyond the game itself and into everyone’s daily life. We will continue to create enjoyment and fulfillment through entertainment so that we can come closer and connect to our fans around the world.

I fully expect to hear Bandai Namco and Fromsoftware let us all know that Elden Ring will have hit 15 million copies sold in the next few days. And for a good reason, as this is easily one of the best games I’ve played in my short gaming life. It has been everything I’ve ever wanted from an Action RPG “Soulslike” game. I’m sure that this is the tip of the iceberg. I have no doubt that there’s some super-secret DLC that’s either being worked on or is done and Bandai Namco is just waiting for more people to pick up the game or beat it first.

Though it hasn’t been clear sailing for Elden Ring and there have been some issues. From framerate issues on all platforms, the PC still suffers from significant stuttering issues that have not been addressed yet. Gamers are still experiencing unexpected problems such as invisible enemies and crashing. We also can’t forget about that notorious Dark Souls hacker, turned Elden Ring hacker (JERK!) Malcolm Reynolds has turned his attention to the PC version of Elden Ring and has been getting gamers soft banned. It’s been a mess, and that’s putting things lightly. I’m hoping Fromsoftware manages to get these issues fixed, and the sooner, the better.

Elden Ring is currently available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
