Elden Ring Guide: How to Activate the Great Rune of the Unborn

By Keith MitchellFebruary 27, 2022
Elden Ring - How to Activate the Great Rune of the Unborn-02

What’s going on, Elden Ring fans! Welcome back to yet another The Outerhaven’s Elden Ring Guide, and this one is for all of you that are confused regarding the Great Rune of the Unborn. You know, the Great Rune that you get from the Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon encounter.

I think there’s some confusion regarding this, and I was there at one point myself. So let me break it down on just how to activate the Great Rune of the Unborn.

How to Activate the Great Rune of the Unborn

So, you’ve beaten Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, and you’ve claimed her Great Rune. Now what? Well, that’s the question on everyone’s mind, and it’s been one that everyone has been asking. When you beat Godrick the Grafted, you were given his Great Rune and were able to activate it quite easily. So, what’s the deal with the Great Rune of the Unborn? Well, there’s some trickery going on here, and the answer is right in from of your face. Literally. The rune even gives you a hint of what its use is for.

Elden Ring - How to Activate the Great Rune of the Unborn-01

You see, you don’t get to use the Great Rune of the Unborn like you do the other Great Runes. You may notice that the Great Rune of the Unborn is in your inventory, but even after you manage to unlock the Divine Tower for that region, there’s no option to activate the Great Rune of the Unborn. This is because the rune is already activated.

When talking to Rennala after defeating her, you’ll see that you now have an option to either be reborn or change your character’s cosmetics. Being reborn is the kicker, as it lets you redo all of your stats, just like you could in the Dark Souls games. However, in order to do so, you’ll need a Larval Tear. Changing the look of your character via cosmetics is free, however.

Well, that’s the power of the Great Rune of the Unborn. Yep, that’s it. Unlike other Great Runes that give you passive benefits, this one is exclusively for changing your character. Yeah, that’s it.

You can stop searching on how to activate the Great Rune of the Unborn because it’s already activated. Don’t forget to check out our review of Elden Ring and our guides to help you get through the game.

Elden Ring is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
