Sony’s Mark Cerny endorses the Western Digital Black SN850 for his PS5

In a recent Tweet that I’m sure Mark thought was harmless but also knows how the internet works, he announced that he installed a pair of Western Digital Black SN850 M.2 NVMe SSDs in a “very active two gamer PS5 household.”

While Seagate is out there with the “first” officially certified PlayStation 5 M.2 NVMe SSD, the FireCuda 530, it would seem that Mark Cerny is letting everyone know it’s not the only game in town.

Our solution to our very active two gamer PS5 household? His-and-hers SSDs :-)

Couple of awesome options for 7000MB/s, ended up putting my $$ down on this one. Going to be SWEEET!!! pic.twitter.com/6TuqPwK49x

Of course, Twitter and the internet saw this and have remarked on just how expensive those drives were. But more importantly, it goes to show that gamers have another choice when it comes to PS5 compatible drives. The WD Black Sn850’s were leaked a few months ago before being officially announced by Western Digital. More recently, they were also officially certified for use with the PS5. This was confirmed by a Western Digital spokesperson, according to VGC.

The Western Digital Black SN850 is available in three different flavors; 500GB priced at $149.99, the 1TB model priced at $229.99, and a 2TB version priced at $529.99.

While the Western Digital SSDs are currently available for purchase, keep in mind that you’ll still need access to the PS5 system beta to unlock the SSD slot on the console. TO which we still don’t know when that beta is will be rolled out. However, I’m sure that Mark Cerny doesn’t have to worry about that, unlike the rest of us.

I can’t wait to add more extra storage to my very active PS5 gamer household myself, even though I know it’s going to be an expensive exercise.
