Anime First Reaction: Bokutachi no Remake

By Josh PiedraJuly 3, 2021

A game developer goes back in time…

I got that far into the synopsis when checking out the summer anime titles and instantly added it to my To Watch list. The only thing that I hoped and prayed about Bokutachi no Remake (Remake Our Life) is that it didn’t suck. This show mixed my favorite type of science fiction… time travel… with one of the things I was passionate about… game design. To me, it seemed like the perfect recipe for an amazing show.

So, after a 50-minute premiere, how did it actually stack up to my expectations?

Let’s Go!

First Episode Synopsis

Kyouya Hashiba is a 28-year-old game developer who got laid off from his job when the studio he worked for shut down. After being forced to move back in with his parents, he goes out job searching and runs into a girl who he mistook as being suicidal. Turns out, she is a game developer too and looking for a replacement for some team members who recently left. As luck would turn out, she works for the same company that a group of creators he idolizes known as Platinum Gen.

In the middle of his probationary contract, their project is canceled and history repeats itself. He finds himself back home without a job once again. Previously, he wished that he could fall asleep and wake up to redo his life. Well, after suffering a loss of a job twice, that’s exactly what happens! He wakes up and finds himself back in 2006. In his first life, he got accepted into art school but passed up the opportunity to go. This time, he decides to go through with it.

He ends up moving into a halfway house where he meets his roommates… Aki Shino, Nanko Kogure, and Tsurayuki Rokuoji. Things get off to a weird start when Aki ends up crawling into bed him Kyouya, unbeknownst to him. They all find out that they are in the visual arts class together and head to introductions. Once there, Kyouya recognizes one of the students there as Eiko Kawasegawa… who was the girl he mistook as being suicidal 10 years in the future!

As things get underway, he realizes that everyone has something they’re really good at and he has nothing. Aki and Kyouya go scouting some clubs to join when they are dragged to a freshman mixer. Aki falls asleep and Kyouya brings her back home. He forgot to return her bag and when he does, he spies Aki on her computer drawing an illustration that he is extremely familiar with. In the biggest “No Shit, Sherlock” moment of the episode, Aki Shino turns out to be Akishima Shino of Platinum Gen… like… it was literally her real name with shima attached.

I have no words for anyone who didn’t figure that out based on her introduction.

Worth Watching?

YES – I was thoroughly impressed by the first episode. Nothing seemed too contrived, everything felt well-balanced, and the characters all seem to be diverse enough to where each one has their enjoyable and entertaining quirks.

Eiko was a bit more mean in her younger days. Even her professor pointed that out to her when she threw the spotlight over to a sleeping Tsurayuki in the middle of class. Aki, though… as sweet and innocent as she is… UGH… I HATE HER VOICE! It’s so high-pitched and nasally that I just want to punch a wall whenever she speaks! I really hate characters with voices like this and it is, pretty much the only negative I can say about the show except for 1 glaring issue that I noticed as soon as it was said.

Kyouya introduced himself as a 28-year old, soon-to-be middle-aged man with no special qualities who was living in 2016. He goes back in time 10 years to 2006. 28-10 = 18, right? Well, Aki said that he seemed rather calmer than most 20-year-olds that she knew. That means he’s two years older than what he should be… either that or I missed some sort of time skip where he started school in 2008 instead of 2006? I don’t think that was the case unless Aki just assumed his age. I don’t know what the case is but that struck me as kind of odd.

Either way, this looks to be a pretty fun ride. The humor is spot on, the whole experience is just kind of laid back but interesting at the same time. I really want to see where things end up going from here! Not sure about all of the others shows since I’m only watching a select few but this one already has the makings of being my Anime of the Season!
