Godfall heads to the PlayStation 4, along with a new expansion and a free update

While Godfall was originally released for the PlayStation 5 and PC, it has recently announced that the title will now head to the PlayStation 4. In addition to the cross-gen plan changes, a new expansion called “Fire & Darkness”, and a free update called “Lightbringer” for existing Godfall owners. The Fire & Darkness expansion, Lightbringer update, and the PlayStation 4 port will arrive on August 10th, 2021. This news was announced during the 2021 Gearbox Showcase.

The port to the PS4 is baffling and yet again shoots holes in Sony’s entire “We believe in generations” position. I’m sure this move was enacted to bring in more players as the existing audience is small on the PlayStation 5. Both due to the games’ poor reception and lack of PlayStation 5 consoles. While the game has been steadily losing players on the PC front. This is yet another PS5 game that is being ported to the PS4, and I’m not 100% convinced this is a good idea.

When the game was first released, the biggest reason it wasn’t originally on the PS4 was the graphics and the game engine and that the console couldn’t handle it. This was per the developer, Counterplay Games. Now, to see it being ported makes you wonder if the statement was completely false or if the port is going to be any good.

The Fire & Darkness expansion will take players to the fire realm, which is new to the game. Here, players will face off against new enemies and will be introduced to a new story. While the Lightbringer update will add a new endgame mode, add more loot as well as 50 Valorplaters and cross-play support. PlayStation 5 owners will be to play alongside the PlayStation 4 owners and vice versa. Co-op matchmaking was teased for Godfall a few months ago, however, there hasn’t been any confirmation if the matchmaking is going to extend to the PC version. To that, I say I hope that it does. The PC version of the game has been slowly dying and adding crossplay support could help address that.

This is all interesting to me. Godfall failed to impress when it was originally released. Despite my best attempts to enjoy the game, I simply couldn’t. I know I’m not alone either, just looking over at Metacritic, Opencritic, and several other places. Sure, it has good bones and has potential, this expansion and update could be examples of stuff happening too late. The verdict is out on if Godfall coming to the PS4 will accomplish the goal of bringing in more players.

Look for Godfall on the PS4, as well as the Fire & Darkness expansion and Lightbringer update on August 10th, 2021.
