Horizon Forbidden West gameplay revealed

By Poch SaldanaMay 27, 2021

Sony’s State of Play from earlier today showcased an extensive first look at Guerilla Games’ upcoming (absolutely jaw-dropping) technical showcase, Horizon Forbidden West.

Before the 14-minute long showcase of Horizon Zero Dawn‘s sequel was revealed to the public, Sony hosted a special countdown live stream earlier this morning giving glimpses of some of the world’s locale. A few highlights include snow-capped mountain tops, temple ruins, and lush jungles with some truly vibrant vegetation.

Unlike the countdown, the gameplay reveal itself emphasized Forbidden West’s overhauled mobility and combat.  In Alloy’s confrontations with the series-staple mechanical beasts and a mysterious new group of human foes, we saw a glimpse of the title’s much improved vertical maneuverability.

The game’s heroine now comes equipped with a grappling hook allowing her to swiftly zip between points even in combat, and a paraglider to soar in the air. Alloy also now has the ability to dive underwater thanks to a new diving mask and unlike diving in other titles, Forbidden West allows the player to swim beneath the surface as much as they want; there’s no oxygen meter to impede exploration.

The gameplay reveal demonstrated a few of Alloy’s new situation-specific tools as well that include adhesive bombs to immobilize foes and a smoke bomb to briefly blind enemies. The footage concluded with a look at a dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge and a mysterious red storm brewing on the horizon.

Additional details were not announced, such as the titles release window much less release date, but we did get confirmation that the title will still be coming to both the PS4 and PS5. Interestingly enough, while the game was announced to release in 2021, the official page has the game’s release date listed under “to be confirmed”.

We’ll see if Sony will share any major updates soon, but we know that Sony will be skipping E3 2021 again this year so fans might need to wait a while.

Horizon Forbidden West is being developed by Guerrilla Games and published PlayStation Studios. The title will launch on both the PS4 and PS5 with a release date yet to be announced.

Big fan of games, writing, and writing about games! Two things Poch will always stand by--the Vita was ahead of its time and the world is a better place with a new Rhythm Heaven on the horizon.
