Fly Me to the Moon Vol. 4 Review

By Josh PiedraMarch 20, 2021
Fly Me to the Moon

Title: Fly Me to the Moon Vol. 4
Author: Kenjiro Hata
Publisher: Viz Media
Language: English
Format: Paperback
Pages: 192
Genre: Slice of Life, Romance, Comedy
Publication Date: March 9, 2021

The Story

Fly Me to the Moon Vol. 4 continues Nasa and Tsukasa’s trip to see Nasa’a parents. Nasa’s father shows Tsukasa his collection and, suddenly, she becomes infatuated with history. So much so that she drags Nasa along on a tour of Nara where they visit a few historical sights and take some hilarious photos. Once the trip is over it’s time to head back to their…

…burned down apartment!

Apparently, while they were away, lightning struck their home and left nothing behind… except for the plant that Nasa received as a gift when they got married. Nasa is calm since all of his important stuff is in a safety deposit box and any other important documents were digitally scanned to the cloud. He even has fire insurance! They head to the bathhouse in order to relax a bit before figuring out what to do next. After hearing the story (and taking a gander at Nasa’s genitals), Kanade suggests that the two of them stay in the spare room they have at the bathhouse… so they move right in!

There was a pretty hilarious moment involving Aya and how slow she is but I’ll let you guys read that for yourselves! It’s worth it!

After this… life almost returns to normal for them. Tsukasa cooks for Nasa… he takes her shopping to get new clothes to replace the ones that got burned up… and suddenly, they are out apartment hunting. Nothing really got resolved but there is always next volume for that to happen.

Characters

I can’t really say any of the characters developed here. Nasa’s father was a bit proud to show off his collection… including his Japanese katana blade which he didn’t even know if he could unsheathe properly! Outside of that, despite being odd, he is a pretty decent guy.

Outside of the funny Aya segment, nobody really changed or progressed. I guess you could count Nasa’s coolheaded nature when staring disaster and homelessness in the face but after he has been built up as someone who is always prepared for any situation, did it really shock you that much? I would say Tsukasa further cemented the idea that she made the right choice when marrying Nasa through this whole ordeal but I really can’t think of anything else that happened here that screams “wow, these characters really took a big step forward!”

Final Thoughts

Fly Me to the Moon continues to be an overly cute series. While Nasa’s house burning down was a pretty big shock, it didn’t really seem as such because Nasa himself wasn’t bothered by it one bit. Because of the way Kaname helped him out, Nasa really comes off as a guy who puts in a lot of work and effort but is oblivious the to fruits of his labors… then he just stumbles into a solution to a problem thanks to the people he’s helped out without even realizing it. Tsukasa, on the other hand, can see it all quite clearly and is amazed at how revered Nasa is by everyone he touches.

Thinking back, with the exception of the apartment burning down, not much really happened in this volume. Sure, they did go apartment hunting but they didn’t pick something out yet. They went clothes shopping and there were some tender romantic moments… especially on the last couple of pages. It’s as if the story came to a bit of a halt so I’m hoping things pick up again in Volume 5 (well… I did watch the anime so I do know that they do).

Still, even with knowing what’s coming next, this seemed like an odd place to just end this volume. There was no real punch to it but it still didn’t fail to entertain!
