The Story

Fly Me to the Moon Vol. 3 starts off in a pretty cute manner. Nasa and Tsukasa are in bed together and he wonders if it’s okay to snuggle with his wife. He holds her tightly until she turns over and bonks her head against his. After waking up, Nasa thinks he’s a dead man when she simply gives him a kiss and goes back to sleep!

D’aaawwww….

After that, Kaname wants to know if Nasa is ready to “move out of that dump” and it’s actually something that he has been thinking about. That all comes to a halt when he receives a phone call from his mother and tells her that he got married… something he never bothered mentioning to his parents…. Ever!

Because as such, his parents want to meet Tsukasa. Therefore, a trip is planned but since they are going to end up taking the bus, there’s going to be several stops along the way. Because as such, they procure a camera so that they can take pictures of each other in order to preserve the memories of their trip. Nasa is a bit more click-happy with the camera than Tsukasa, though, and ends up taking a metric ton of pictures of her! Of course, the trip can’t be simple and straight-forward!

Chitose ends up catching wind of it and goes to great lengths to tail them in order to observe… hoping that some of the local rumors are true and that misfortune would end up happening, causing their marriage to dissolve! It doesn’t happen but it doesn’t stop some hilarious moments from happening… such as dodging a popular television show that was filing in the area and not wanting to get caught up in it. Of course, Chitose ends up getting discovered and more hilarity ensues; however… could Chitose actually be accepting of their marriage!? Hmm…

We then move on to meeting Nasa’s parents and… uh… they’re…. “interesting” to say the least. His father is an archaeologist and he wants to have a private chat with Tsukasa. The two of them have been acting really strange so Tsukasa he no idea what to make of it. Turns out, he just wanted to thank Tsukasa for saving Nasa’s life. They are actually overjoyed to have her as part of the family; however, it doesn’t stop them from being weird… especially when they know that Nasa and Tsukasa will be sleeping in the same room together and then that they might want to consummate their marriage in their home. This is where this volume ends… with a pretty hilarious note with them making a remark about possibly hearing a certain noise coming from Nasa’s room!

Characters

Not really much in the way of development for Nasa and Tsukasa. Sure, they are still newlyweds trying to figure out how marriage works but I wouldn’t call anything that they did here as “development” as it doesn’t seem any different than what we were given in the first two volumes.

Chitose, on the other hand, seems to be partially acknowledging their relationship but it doesn’t mean she’s fully accepting of it yet. It was still hilarious to see her spying on them in hopes that some weird omen would end up being the catalyst to their divorce. Again, Chitose is about as basic as you can get when it comes to tsundere-style characters but when you get her in small doses like this, she’s pretty entertaining and tolerable!

Nasa’s parents are good people… albeit strange. You didn’t really get a sense for that in the first volume but now that we see them in a more grandiose way here in volume three, you can really get a better understanding of why Nasa doesn’t really talk to them much nor did he want to tell them about his marriage to Tsukasa. When Nasa’s father; however, thanked Tsukasa for saving his son’s life, it really hit you in the feels. You could tell just how happy they were that Nasa was still alive and still apart of their lives. It makes you wonder why Nasa wouldn’t bother to speak to his parents on a more consistent basis? To kind of ignore two people who care about him that much, it’s kind of painful. The fact that they were so accepting of Tsukasa, even after all of the circumstances, just shows how good they really are… even if their way of thinking is a bit out there!

Final Thoughts

Looks like we’re not done visiting Nasa’s parents. Volume four looks to continue this little journey! This volume had another great balance of cuteness, wholesomeness, comedy, and just overall warm moments! I don’t think you’ll find a purer romantic comedy out there than Tonikaku Kawaii (or any of the other billions of names this series has).

If you haven’t seen the anime or read the manga yet… I urge you to check this one out. The only complaint I would have about this series is that it is very little in the way of true drama. Tsukasa almost seems too perfect. It constantly makes you wonder if she has some sort of ulterior motive but when nothing happens, you start to question whether or not if she’s truly in love with Nasa. All signs point to yes but something just seems off with her. If she truly is in love with Nasa, then the lack of real drama just makes her come off way too perfect. To be able to tolerate everything Nasa does, to not really get mad at him, to continually guide him through the relationship without any type of frustration… it all just seems a bit too good to be true… or too synthetic.

Maybe that’s something that will change and we’ll get some real drama in a future volume but we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, enjoy the absurd levels of cuteness that this series provides!
