DualSense now officially supported in Steam client

By Keith MitchellDecember 9, 2020
DualSense PS5 Controller

While Valve has constantly been pushing updates for the Sony PS5 DualSense controller in Steam, you needed to be on the beta client to access those changes. That’s all over as Valve has now pushed these changes to the live Steam client.

Steam Input

  • Added support for PS5 Controllers to Steam Input including trackpad, gyro, lightbar, and rumble functionality
  • Added a directional swipe mode for use with trackpads and gyro
  • Improved support for games that use raw input for controllers
  • Fixed the Xbox Series X controller showing up as 2 separate controllers
  • Fixed controller input for some games using embedded Chrome

Thanks to the Steam Input API, DualSense support includes the touchpad, lightbar, rumble, and gyroscope features – all over Bluetooth or wired. If you have a DualSense controller and want to see the Steam API in action and at its fullest, I recommend checking out either Horizon: Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, or No Man’s Sky. These were originally PlayStation 4 titles that have made their way to the PC, and feature PlayStation button prompts.

Of course, I’ve already given the updated Steam client a try, and it works just it did in the beta. To make sure this process went smoothly, I opted out of the beta client so that Steam can update and restart. You’ll want to do the same to avoid any issues and to see the updated client.

Again, this is all fantastic news, but I’m still holding out that Sony PlayStation will get involved and fully support the PC.  I keep harping on this as I want to see haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers being supported in Steam. My fingers are still crossed!

Are you using the DualSense for your PC gaming? Let us know in the comments!
