NEO: The World Ends With You Announced For PS4 and Switch

By Keith MitchellNovember 23, 2020

It should have been called The World Ends with Two.

Square Enix’s TWEWY or The World Ends with You, is a beloved RPG that has seen releases on the Nintendo DS and Switch. A new game has been announced for the series, NEO: The World Ends with You. Seeing how this is a sequel, they totally could have called this The World Ends with Two, a missed opportunity if you ask me. The title is slated for a Summer 2021 release on the Nintendo Switch, and for the first time, TWENTY will grace the PlayStation 4.

This new title is also taking a different approach; it’s gone the full 3D route, while previous entries have been 2D. I know one fan of TWEWY isn’t sure how he feels about this, and I’m sure others feel the same. By going with the 3D approach, they’re able to highlight the world more than ever possible going with 2D. Yet, at the same time, 3D games tend to miss some of the charms that made the original 2D games so loved. It’s going to be interesting following the development of the sequel, that’s for sure.

NEO: The World Ends with You transports players to the streets of the Shibuya, where they will take part in the “Reapers’ Game,” a life-or-death battle for survival. Players will take on the role of Rindo as they explore the heart of Tokyo to uncover the mysteries behind the sinister Game in which they have been forced to take part.
NEO: The World Ends with You brings a re-creation of modern Shibuya to life in a unique and comic-inspired style. Players can explore and enjoy the sights, sounds, and culture of this bustling city, fight monsters alongside their ally companions in fast-paced action battles, and complete missions as they seek to change the fate they’ve been handed.

Along with the announcement, a new trailer showcasing the game was released. Here, we can see the new 3D world and some gameplay while listening to yet another remix of Twister, a favorite track from TWEWY. We’re also introduced to four new characters during the trailer, which looks to serve as the protagonists for NEO: TWEWY; Rindou, Fred, Nagi, and Minamimoto.

What’s interesting here is there’s been a change to the gameplay. Now we’re able to use four characters at once, and going off the trailer, they’ll all share the same life bar. If that’s true, that’s going to make for some differences in gameplay. Outside of that, everything so far looks to be similar to the original TWEWY entries.
