Ah, yes, Demon’s Souls… One of my favorite games of all time, and now it’s remastered for the PlayStation 5. Needless to say that I’ve been spending a lot of time in this game and probably just as much trying to find as many ways to farm items. Today we’re talking about the Gold Coin, perhaps one of the hardest items in the game to come across and/or farm.

Why is this item so heavily sought? The Gold Coins provide a nice luck stat boost for starters, which is great for finding items. It’s also the key for using the luck start glitch that allows players to one-shot bosses and other characters when invading worlds when using the Blueblood Sword. You also need a Gold Coin to get the Ring of Uneven Scales if you’re going for the King of Rings trophy.

The downside to this item is that not only is it incredibly rare, but it also is a huge pain to farm. It also only drops from one specific enemy; the Fat Officials. These enemies only appear in the Bolertian Palace Archstone and StoneFang Tunnel. Thankfully, there are ways to help improve your chances of farming this item.

Demon's Souls Remake - Fat Official

Say hello to the Fat Official.

Best place to farm the gold coin

This guide is dependant on two things; Having already killed the Armored Spider boss in Stonefang Tunnel. And the second is being extremely lucky as the RNG for this is terrible. That said, there are a couple of ways to make this process a bit faster.

You’ll want to wear the Providential Ring, as it will boost your luck. Turning the world to Pure Black Tendency is good for this. Yes, the enemies get stronger, but your enemies will drop better items as well. You can easily get Pure Black World Tendency by becoming human and dying 5 times. And ONLY die in Stonefang Tunnel, not the Nexus; this way, your PBWT doesn’t affect your other Archstone’s. Dumping some points into your luck stat and having the Large Sword of Searching also doesn’t hurt.

  1. Head down to the Tunnel City checkpoint, which opens up after the Armored Spider is defeated.
  2. Once there, head down the short passage and hang a left. Be sure to kill the enemies before you do, and watch out for the exploding mine carts.
  3. At the end of the tunnel is an elevator, and to its right is a Fat Official. If you’re under-leveled, this guy can easily kill you, so be careful of his fire blasts.
  4. You’ll want to farm the fat official, as this is the fastest way to do so. Kill him, pray he drops the Gold Coin, and loot him. If he doesn’t give you the item, lower the elevator up, wait until it’s gone, and suicide down the pit. At this point, you can just run back and continue to farm the Fat Official. Repeat this step until you get the item.
