Nvidia delays its upcoming RTX 3070 GPU in order to meet demands

By Keith MitchellOctober 2, 2020

Delayed to October 29th to avoid another disastrous launch

So far, Nvidia and its partners have sat through two ridiculous GPU launches with the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. Two GPU’s that embarrassed previously generation of Nvidia GPUs but also were snatched up by scalpers looking to make a quick buck. Now it would seem that Nvidia doesn’t want a three-peat and has announced they will delay the launch of the RTX 3070 until they’re confident they’ll have enough cards to go around.

Originally slated to be released on October 15th, 2020, will be delayed for two weeks and will now release on October 29th, 2020. This was confirmed over on Nvidia’s blog.

Production of GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards are ramping quickly. We’ve heard from many of you that there should be more cards available on launch day. To help make that happen, we are updating the availability date to Thursday, October 29th.
We know this may be disappointing to those eager to purchase a GeForce RTX 3070 as soon as possible, however this shift will help our global partners get more graphics cards into the hands of gamers on launch day.

Just like the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, the demand for the RTX 3070 will be sky high and many consumers will once again fight an uphill battle against scalpers and their bots. Here’s to hope that next time, many of you will be able to snag an RTX 3070. Expect them to fly off the shelves, that’s for sure.

While priced at just $499.99 (for the founder’s edition), the RTX 3070 is no slough and according to Nvidia. Unlike the RTX 3080 and 3090, the RTX 3070 is better suited for 1080p and 1440p gaming, while utilizing less power consumption, than the RTX 2080 Ti, while being faster. My only concern is that the RTX 3070 has even less VRAM, which could become a concern as more games require more memory in the future.

As for the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, we’re slowly seeing them trickle into online stores, only to be gobbled up just as fast. I don’t see this slowly down until at least Q2 2021, but hopefully, I’m wrong. I’m still checking every day in hopes that I’ll beat a bot on grabbing the slow stock of the RTX 3080, though I have seen few RTX 3090 up for sale. I just can’t justify spending $1500, unless I want to sleep in the doghouse.

Interestingly enough, this puts the RTX 3070 right smack in the release window of AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 GPU, which will be released on October 28th, 2020.  Powered by AMD’s Big Navi, the RX 6000, if you can believe the leaks, will be positioned against the RTX 3070 and will offer similar performance.

If you’re in the market for a GPU, it’s definitely heating up.
