‘Drunk History’ Canceled After Six Seasons

By Sara Roncero-MenendezAugust 21, 2020

Have you ever dreamed of getting sloshed and telling your favorite historical tales on TV? Well, you’re going to have to kickstart your own show because the epic historical comedy show Drunk History has not been renewed for a seventh season.

If you’ve never seen the show, the premise is pretty simple. The host Derek Waters gets drunk with a comedian guest who regals Waters with a historical tale when properly inebriated. Then the show produces a dramatization of the events, with famous actors mouthing the words of the drunken narrator to hilarious effect. You can watch the majesty for yourself in this clip:

The show was in pre-production and getting guest narrators when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March. However, according to Deadline, the global pandemic is not the reason why the show is canceled. ViacomCBS, which owns Comedy Central, has been on a spree of canceling shows and green-lighting others, the latter being mostly nostalgic reboots.

It is interesting that they are canceling a show that is still getting nominated for awards. The sixth season of the show has three Emmy nominations, Outstanding Variety Sketch series, as well as Outstanding Costumes and Production Design for a Reality/Variety/Competition series. It would be hilarious (or tragic) if the show won those Emmys after getting the boot. At least we’ll have six season of historical madness and mayhem to look back on.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
