Netflix’s upcoming Transformers War for Cybertron gets a release date

Netflix has finally announced when their upcoming Transformers animated series will hit the service. Transformers: War for Cybertron, not to be confused with the game of the same name, will premiere on July 30th, 2020. Originally slated to be aired in June 2020, COVID-19 complications lead to the delay of the eagerly awaited series.

Along with the announcement was a new teaser trailer that sets a different tone than the previous one. While the first one laid the groundwork for the upcoming series, this one shows a darker side of things with Megatron assembling a huge army of Decepticons to lay waste to the Autobots once and for all. While most of the footage is recycled, there are new bits such as Megatron rallying his troops and Megatron seemingly putting the hurt on some poor unfortunate soul.

This looks to be a return to form for the Transformers many of us have grown to love; both Autobot and Decepticon.

What is Transformers: War for Cybertron?

An upcoming series, developed by Netflix, Hasbro, and Rooster Teeth, and will tell a new Transformer’s origin story. It will be a three arc series, with the first being called “Siege”, and consists of six 22-minute episodes. This is similar to Rooster Teeth’s ill-fated Machinima Transformers: Prime Wars Trilogy.  Animation duties have been shared by three studios; Hasbro’s in-house animation studio Allspark Pictures, Rooster Teeth, and Polygon Pictures. This new series was announced back during 2018, and production started following the closure of Machinima.

While this new series is similar in design to Transformers: Prime Wars Trilogy, the only thing they share is several characters. These are completely separate stories, so you don’t have to watch either to understand the other. But as a fan of Transformers, it’s highly recommended that you do.

Here’s the official Netflix summary;

Arc 1: “Siege” – Cybertron has been torn apart because of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons. In an attempt to end the conflict, Megatron considers using the Allspark as a last resort, but Optimus Prime wants to prevent that from happening, even if that means destroying Cybertron in order to save it.

I’ve been looking forward to this new series ever since it was announced and the wait, well I hope it was worth it. Since then I’ve been watching the older Transformer animations, as well as the Transformers Animated Movie. Don’t ask me about those Michael Bay live-action trainwrecks, because I simply wasn’t a fan of any of them.

Are you looking forward to Netflix’s Transformers: War for Cybertron? Let us know in the comments!
