‘Batwoman’ Casting Notice Signals the End of Kate Kane

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 3, 2020

It’s been a weird ride for the CW’s Batwoman. Initially, actress Ruby Rose drops out with the CW promising to put another actress in the role. However, it looks like that plan is now out the window, given the casting notice that went out for a new actress to replace Rose.

According to Deadline, who obtained a copy of the casting call, the show is looking to find an actress for the role of Ryan Wilder. She is in her mid to late 20s, “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed” and “nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.”

Additionally, they supplied the following details: “A former drug-runner, the now-reformed and sober Ryan lives in her van with her plant and is a highly skilled but wildly undisciplined fighter. Like her predecessor, Ryan is an out lesbian, with performers who identify as LGBTQ encouraged to submit for the role.”

While it is not uncommon for DC mantles to be taken up by different people, this move is strange. Batwoman has (as far as I can tell, anyways) always been Kate Kane, so adding another person to the cape and cowl is strange. Ryan Wilder might be a fake name for an already existing DC character rather than a wholly original character. They might see who auditions for the role and then decide who the character will be, or they’re playing it close to the chest. Only time will tell what is going to happen with Batwoman.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
