How to unlock the retro characters in Streets of Rage 4

By Keith MitchellApril 29, 2020
Streets of Rage 4 Character Select Screen

While Streets of Rage 4 features several returning characters from the previous games, as well as newcomers, there’s also a number of unlockable characters. Characters from Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 are all playable, but how do you access them? Well, that’s why you’re here, right?

Unlocking characters in Streets of Rage 4.

Unlocking playable characters in Streets of Rage 4 is quite easy, though you’ll have to grind them out.  Well, all with the exception of Adam, who gets unlocked automatically when you reach a certain point in the story mode.

To do this, you’ll have to accumulate a number of points that are earned by performing chain combos, finishing stages, and end-stage bonuses. These points will level up your overall score in the game and once you pass the several thresholds, you’ll be rewarded with a character from the previous games. Collect them all and this brings the playable roster of characters to 17 in total.

You’ll start unlocking characters once you’ve accumulated 200,000 points and will continue on until you max out the lifetime points. Outside of performing huge combos, you can also earn more points by getting a high ranking on each stage, saving up your stars, and finishing levels with how much is intact on your health meter during the story mode. You can also do this by playing stages on a higher difficulty, this is where the stage select comes into play.

The following characters are all unlockable in Streets of Rage 4.

  • Streets of Rage 4 – Adam Hunter (Reach stage 4 in story mode)
  • Streets of Rage 1 – Axel
  • Streets of Rage 1 – Adam
  • Streets of Rage 1 – Blaze
  • Streets of Rage 2 – Axel
  • Streets of Rage 2 – Blaze
  • Streets of Rage  2 – Skates
  • Streets of Rage 2 – Max
  • Streets of Rage 3 – Axel
  • Streets of Rage 3 – Blaze
  • Streets of Rage 3 – Skates
  • Streets of Rage 3 – Doctor Zan
  • Streets of Rage 3 – Shiva (Unlocked once you surpass all the lifetime points)

Sadly, other newer characters such as Estel Aguirre and others are not playable, or at least not via normal means that we know of. Though I suspect that won’t be the case for long with the PC version and modders.

Streets of Rage 4 releases on April 30th, 2020, and will be available on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. While you’re here don’t forget to check out our review of the game.
