The Story

The fifth issue of Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia picks up right after Rory was kidnapped. He’s being held within a semi-truck when he receives a call over the radio from Drasin. Drasin is trying to con Rory into no-showing the match with Manifest Destiny by making him the World Heavyweight Champion for life. Rory turns it down and ends up escaping from the truck.

The rest of the issues involves Rory and company heading to the final showdown against Manifest Destiny but as one would expect, the journey isn’t going to be a simple straight line.

There’s a lot more to this issue than the synopsis I provided, including an absolutely hilarious portion that fills the middle of the comic involving Rory and Jay Warcloud. The story did feel like it pumped the brakes a little with that little side trip but even though it did so, the pacing didn’t actually feel hindered by it. That just speaks volumes to the entertainment value Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia produces with each and every comic.

Still, the next issue is the last and we will see the ultimate showdown and the fate of everything decided! So far, the story has built up to this moment in an incredible way. It’s like a classic tale of an old hero gone missing but is needed for one last job but that hero doesn’t want anything to do with it (at least at first). I wouldn’t exactly call Rory a hero by any means due to the type of character that he is but he is in that kind of a position. It has been an extremely fun ride and I am really looking forward to seeing how all of this wraps up!

Characters

It was nice to see Jay Warcloud. I would go into details about what he did in this volume and how he is as a character but that would end up giving away a hilarious little mini-arc that needs to be read. Let’s just say that old Indian is in perfect communication with the “dream world” and Rory learns a little bit about that. I’ll just leave it at that.

Rory’s character ended up getting some nice development here as well. Learning to not take the quick payday and the guaranteed fame to do what’s right is a big shift in his character. We even see even more evidence of that at the end of the train where he attempts to make amends with a certain someone. Rory is continuing his redemption arc at the moment and it’s just great to see what he is now versus what he was five issues ago.

Final Thoughts

Every review of this comic, I end up singing its praises and for good reason. The comic is over-the-top, cornball, and just straight up something you would expect to see out of the ’80s. Everything from the character designs, the way the dialogue is written, even with the sci-fi elements added, this just screams nostalgia but it’s more than just a nice trip back to a time where things were infinitely better… it’s also extremely entertaining to read and that combination of entertainment and nostalgia combine to provide one hell of an experience… especially if you are a wrestling fan.

Still, the journey to the final match isn’t paved with simplicity… especially after that cliffhanger… or dare I say… trainhanger ending. Like I said before, I can’t wait to see the final issue but, at the same time, it saddens me because I know once it’s over… it’s over.

If you haven’t read Invasion from Planet Wrestletopia yet, please do so. Get caught up before the finale comes out! I’m positive you won’t be disappointed!
