Destiny 2’s Shadowkeep Expansion and Free-To-Play Version Delayed

The Destiny community is anxiously awaiting the Shadowkeep expansion, the game’s next big expansion after last year’s Forsaken. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to get their hands on all the new weapons and changes. The expansion and the upcoming free-to-play version of Destiny 2, New Light, will now arrive on October 1, two weeks after the originally planned September 17 release date.

“As we get closer and closer to serving up Shadowkeep and New Light, it has become increasingly clear to us that our releases for this Fall would benefit from a bit more time in the oven,” wrote the Destiny development team in an announcement post. “Being independent means that the future of Destiny 2 is entirely on our team. It also means that we’re agile enough to choose to do what’s best for the game and our players, even if it’s the hard choice.”

The devs also outlined some aspects of the Destiny 2 schedule that were affected by the delay. The race for World First on Shadowkeep‘s raid will begin on October 5, the weekend immediately following the expansion’s release. Moments of Triumph, which is currently live right now in Destiny 2, is being extended to September 17, giving players three more weeks to complete their challenges and earn this year’s rewards. There will also be an additional Iron Banner the week of September 17.

Cross-save functionality is still coming to Destiny 2, but there is no concrete release date other than “later this summer.” Cross-save is scheduled to release “well ahead of Shadowkeep,” so most likely sometime in September.

Destiny 2 director Luke Smith tweeted that he is planning on going in-depth on what Bungie has learned about the game in the past six months following their split with Activision and how that has affected some of the changes the studio is planning on making with Shadowkeep.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Destiny 2: New Light will now launch on October 1, 2019. Both the free-to-play game and expansion will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, with the Stadia version not going live until the service launches sometime in November.
