AX 2019: Katsuhiro Otomo Reveals Orbital Era Anime Film

By Josh PiedraJuly 5, 2019

In addition to announcing Akira receiving a new anime adaptation and a 4k remaster for the original 1988 film, creator Katsuhiro Otomo unveiled a brand-new anime movie called Orbital Era. The film will be produced by studio Sunrise and will serve as Otomo’s third film behind Akira and Steamboy. The movie is said to be in production now; however, a premiere date has not yet been given.

According to Otomo, the Orbital Era’s story will be a space science fiction story involving young adults and their coming of age within a space colony. The story takes place over the course of the year’s seasons.

Sunrise themselves gave a detailed synopsis of the film:

The plot takes place in the near-future on a space colony under construction. It is an action-adventure story following the lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. “The reality found in mankind’s future” will be depicted through their perspective.

In addition, a teaser trailer also aired at Anime Expo for the film which you can view below:
