I Finally Beat Resident Evil 2’s 4th Survivor Mode

By Keith MitchellFebruary 4, 2019
I just wanted to meet the Grim Reaper

Now I need to do it again, only faster

Update: I did manage to do it faster. The next run was finished at 9:45. I managed to shave off 16 seconds, but still not fast enough.

There, I finally did it. Upon completion of Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 Remake, I unlocked the Fourth Survivor mode. You know, the one where you play as Hunk aka “Grim Reaper” and try to make it out of the fubar’d police station in one piece. To be honest, I’ve beaten both the original and 2nd runs for both Leon and Claire.  I was actually going to start my hardcode run, but decided to do a few Fourth Survivor runs.

Damn, that was a mistake in a half. I’ve never run the original in the 1998 classic, and I figured how hard could it be. Turns out, it’s not very hard. Instead, it’s all about enemy placement, ammo control, knowing when you use your healing items, and when to run. So, sure it’s not hard but damn if it is even remotely easy.

Just when you think you got it down, some variable jumps out and screws up everything. Like a zombie not getting into place fast or slow enough. Or you get jumped by three zombies instead of the two that were behind that door before. There are even times where enemies that used to take 1 or 2 shots to the head, suddenly decide that maybe you need to pump an extra one into them.

Yeah, it’s all about control, remembering who is where, and a bit of luck. At least that’s what it felt like to me. So after several hours of raging, cursing, having my wife check on me multiple times. I managed to beat the mode with a modest 10:01. Which is a few seconds less than IGN’s run that they posted. I’m happy I finally did it, but I’m not too thrilled about the total time it took. More so that I made several silly mistakes, like going back for my knife that robbed me of a few seconds. Or when I decided to walk, instead of run in certain segments so I wouldn’t alert the Lickers.

Check out the entire run below, while I figure out how to trim my time down to less than 10 minutes. Maybe even get it under 9 minutes. I know it’s possible, I’ve seen several people do it.

Oh well, back into the world of Resident Evil 2 I go. Wish me luck!
