Gen Fukunaga Steps Down as FUNimation General Manager

By Josh PiedraFebruary 1, 2019
funimation

Gen Fukunaga, who was a founder of FUNimation, announced that he is stepping down from his role as General Manager of the company. Fukunaga is not leaving the company, though. He is taking a new position within FUNimation as a chairman. FUNimation has begun the process of looking for a new General Manager and Fukunaga assured the company that he will work with them to find his replacement and to make sure everything goes smoothly through the transition.

Fukunaga, as a chairman, will still have oversight of the business and will focus on managing relationships with content partners.  He also mentioned that in addition to these duties, he will also serve in an advisory role as well.

One thing Fukunaga wanted to stress was that this was not a spur of the moment decision. The intention was to transition into a different role ever since Sony purchased a majority interest in the company. This purchased happened back in 2017 so it took them a little over a year and a half to prepare and make this transition possible. Fukunaga truly believes that this transition is best for business, especially since he feels FUNimation is truly hitting its stride.

Fukunaga founded FUNimation in 1994 and served as the president and general manager up until he stepped down.
