Groundhog Day Meets Friday the 13th Once More in ‘Happy Death Day 2U’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 2, 2018

It’s no secret that I loved Happy Death Day. It’s a movie with genuine scares, great laughs, and some stellar writing and acting. So when I heard there was going to be a sequel, I was excited by confused. How was that going to work if the main character pulls out of the loop? Well, it looks like there’s something bigger afoot in this new trailer for Happy Death Day 2U.

Two years after the lopping incident on her birthday, college student Tree is living her best life. Unfortunately for her, something supernatural gets in the way and now she’s being thrown back into the same time loop. However, two main things are different. For one, now her friends are all involved in the loop, dying and coming back on her birthday. The second is that the original killer, Tree’s roommate Lori, is murdered, meaning that Tree is facing a whole new enemy.

It’s pretty cool to see all the original actors returning for their roles, especially since there’s no way this film would work otherwise. The original film’s director, Christopher B. Landon, is returning to helm the production as well as being the screenwriter. Landon has discussed the sequel’s plot before, hoping to answer the biggest question left lingering at the end of the film: why was Tree stuck in a time loop in the first place? And it looks like we’re going to be getting those answers now! Well, provided it doesn’t pull Hobbit on us and tack on a third movie for shits and giggles.

Happy Death Day 2U premieres in theaters on February 14, 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
