The Queen of Sarcasm Returns in MTV’s ‘Daria’ Reboot

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 23, 2018

She’s rude, she’s smart, she’s everyone’s favorite disaffected teenager from the early 2000s: Daria. And, perhaps more importantly, she’s back to graced our screens with some signature snark. MTV is bringing her back to the small screen with some other classic shows.

A spinoff of Beavis and Butthead, the original show followed Daria Morgendorrfer, a sarcastic, brilliant teen who deals with the day-to-day interactions with her family, friends, and the rest of her small town.

Now, MTV is looking to bring the character back with a new show, Daria and Jodie. The show is being written by Grace Edwards, who worked on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and will focus on both teenagers as they tackle their small town as well as issues of race, gender, and more. MTV will also be bringing back its popular reality series The Real World and cult classic Aeon Flux.

As a fan of the original show, I do have some concerns though. Daria’s best friend is the equally sarcastic Jane, not the genuine and well-meaning Jodie. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I think Jodie shouldn’t get more of a role this time around. It’s just if you’re going to make a show that stays true to the spirit of the original, why break up such an iconic duo?

Still, it’s exciting to see what Daria could be now in the culture of 2010’s, and will have the chance to speak to en entirely new generation of tween, teens, and adults. No word yet as to when we can expect the reboot to air.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
