Overwatch League Skins Arrive

By James VerzuhJanuary 10, 2018

Update has Skins, Sprays, and More

Yesterday Overwatch gamers on all platforms had a big update waiting for them.  The over 1.5 GB update contained the long awaited Overwatch League (OWL) skins.  The update also contained team sprays for use in the game as well as player icons.  With the OWL starting today The OuterHaven has all the info you need so that you can represent your favorite team in time for today’s matches.

OWL in the Game

It’s long been speculated that the Overwatch team would add something to do with the league in the base game.  Previously the game had an image in the corner of the main screen to advertise an event such as the world cup or the OWL.  Yesterday, however, the update added a whole new menu to the game.  Players will now see an heading marked Overwatch League.

Within this heading there is a brief schedule of upcoming games as well as icons for each of the teams.  By selecting these icons you can view and purchase team skins.  Within each team heading is the option to purchase league tokens, more on those below.

The Skins

Each team in the OWL will have special skins in their colors and with the team name or logo where appropriate.  These skins will come in traditional Home and Away variants.  OWL Commissioner Nate Nanzer discussed in a video back in December that the skins available for fans to purchase will be the home team skins.  These are the same home skins that we’ve seen in the preseason, and frankly they look great.  The skins are available individually by hero and team meaning that if you want Dallas skins for all of your mains you’ll need to purchase each one separately.

The Price

Each of these skins cost 100 League Tokens.   These tokens are purchased separably from the familiar loot boxes.  Tokens can be purchased in groups of 100, 200, 400, 900, and 2600 for USD $4.99, $9.99, $19.99, $39.99, and $99.00 respectively.  This means that each skin will run you about five dollars.  Nanzer was true to his word in the original announcement however; anyone who logs into Overwatch between now and February 13 will receive 100 league tokens for free.

Other OWL Stuff

All players now have some other ways to show support for their team.  Overwatch league sprays and icons have been added to the game, all unlocked, all free.  Players can spam their favorite team’s logo all over the spawn room and payload to their hearts content.  The icons are pretty cool as well, especially since these are one of the only unlocks you cannot purchase.  All team logos and the OWL logo are available.

Overall these skins are a really cool addition to the game.  In the few rounds I’ve played since the update hit I’ve seen OWL skins in each one.  Playing a match where everyone has a skin from their favorite team has the same feeling of playing a pickup game of soccer or football with other fans.  It’s a great way to represent your favorite team, and appropriate as well.  We support NFL teams with their uniforms, this is the Overwatch version.

Make sure to log into Overwatch on any platform by February 13 to ensure you get your free OWL league tokens.  The Overwatch League starts today at 4:00 pm PST.  (That means you still have time to get your team skin on before the first match!)
