SDCC 2017 – Special Stages And An Opening Animation For Sonic Mania

By Keith MitchellJuly 23, 2017

During last night’s panel at SDCC 2017, we learned about two new features for the upcoming Sonia Mania. The first was that the game will see the return of the special stages similar to those from Sonic CD.

These stages will have Sonic collecting rings to additional time and blue spheres for more speed. Ultimately, Sonic will need to chase down a UFO in order to collect a Chaos Emerald. As you can see in the image below, they even look like the special stage like from Sonic 1.  Fans of the series will likely note that Sonic 4 included the special stages from 1 and 2.

They also released the music for the special stage, called Dimension Heist. You can also check that out below.

As a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I really enjoyed those special stages and I’m happy to see them return.

The second piece of info that was dropped is that Sonic Mania will also receive an opening animation – similar to that from Sonic CD. Fans of both the original Sonic CD opening and the updated version will know exactly what I’m talking about. For those who aren’t familiar with it, check out this link and be prepared to be amazed.

The animation will be shown off on August 14th, 2017, which is one day before Sonic Mania is released on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
