2D Zelda Possible On Nintendo Switch

By Todd BlackFebruary 14, 2017
Legend of Zelda

A little while ago, Legend of Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma stated that he believed he didn’t use the full potential of the Nintendo Switch in Breath of the Wild. This was later noted to be true, as the game doesn’t use the HD rumble feature. Through that statement, he also noted that another dedicated Zelda for the Switch was possible.

Now though, an interesting wrinkle has been thrown on things. As he was asked by Game Informer whether a 2D Zelda title, meaning in the style of Link to the Past, Link Between Worlds, Minish Cap, Seasons/Ages, Tri-Force Heroes, etc., could happen on the Nintendo Switch. His answer was very intriguing:

“The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don’t necessarily want to combine them and have them think together, but rather have each think about what they can bring to Nintendo Switch from their own perspective,” he said.

If that sounded too cryptic for you, maybe this will be better:

“The handheld development team will not be phased out because of Nintendo Switch. Switch will allow the users to bring their home console on the go, but this doesn’t mean handheld game development like Nintendo 3DS will be discontinued.”

Tri-Force Heroes

Basically what he’s saying is that the Switch can bring all avenues of gameplay to everyone via one system. So why wouldn’t there be a possibility for a 2D Zelda game alongside Breath of the Wild? It’d be a different team, so Aonuma could work on a…third…Zelda title? Just saying.

This isn’t the only Zelda news to come out today. As Breath of the Wild was revealed to be getting DLC! The first pack will arrive this Summer, and feature a new Cave of Trials challenge, a Hard mode, and a new feature for the map. Then, in the Holiday season, we’ll be getting a new dungeon, a “new story, and more challenges.

So, whether you’re a 2D or 3D Legend of Zelda fan, it looks like the Nintendo Switch may have you covered.
