Thoughts on SDCC 2016 Trailers

By Shelby RoyalJuly 25, 2016

San Diego Comic Con is a mecca for more than just “geek” culture. Movie and television trailers are announced every year that excite everyone and SDCC 2016 did not disappoint! Many trailers were released for some really exciting things, but these are the SDCC 2016 trailers I found the most interesting. Here we go!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the next installment in the Potter-verse. It takes place almost 70 years before everyone’s favorite moody wizard attends Hogwarts. It follows Newt Scamander (Ezra Miller) and his adventures tracking down magical beasts in 1926 New York.

I’ll be honest. When I heard about a new movie taking place in the wizarding world that did NOT include Harry Potter and the gang, I wasn’t super thrilled about it. However, this trailer quickly “obliterated” that opinion. This movie will give us a chance to see the life of a wizard in a different country and a different time period. (What a coincidence that J.K. would release info on all the American wizarding schools before the movie trailers released.) All of the beasts look fantastic, and I cannot wait for it to release in November!!

Justice League

When I started this trailer, I really, really wanted to be excited about it (and not just because of Khal Drogo); however, I was disappointed.  I think DC has really dropped the ball movie-wise compared to Marvel. Marvel already has two Avengers movies out, and I feel like DC should have done everything in its power to bring something new. The scene where Bruce Wayne recruits The Flash is super similar to Iron Man recruiting a certain someone to the Avengers. Other similarities could be made, but DC really needs to bring it with this movie. I really hope they can bring the audiences something new that Marvel hasn’t already done.

Remakes and Reboots: The New Trend

I doubt anyone is surprised to hear that there were quite a few “remakes” in the Comic Con cycle. I bet you’d be even less shocked to hear that they don’t look as good as the originals. The first one I saw was the trailer for Blair Witch. I feel like re-making the Blair Witch ruins everything about the original that makes it so great. It was the first of the found footage genre, and for years I believed this actually happened to these poor kids. I just don’t think they’ll be able to capture the same atmosphere that made the original so great.

Speaking of horror remakes, I was hesitant when I saw The Exorcist on the list. After watching the trailer, I am excited about the TV show aspect of it. It doesn’t look or feel like they’re trying to copy the original, but FOX is taking that idea and making it something new. In this day and age of remakes and reboots, I hope this The Exorcist sets itself apart.

Last but not least, King Kong is making a debut on the big screen… again. Despite King Kong being done a time or two, Kong: Skull Island seems to come at it a little differently. Not only is it modern, but after seeing the trailer, it seems like they’re really playing up the horror aspect of the film. With big names like Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman, and Brie Larson starring in the film, I really hope this will be another great Kong film. Let’s hope he stays out of New York this time!

2017 is looking like a great year for superheroes, fantastic beasts, and fandoms of all kinds. So keep and eye out for the titles above and more!

Shelby has a deep love for gaming, anime, literature, margaritas, corgis, and all things nerdy. Her earliest memories include playing Super Mario World on the SNES with her aunt. Since then, her love of gaming has grown and she has come to accept all systems as equals. She is so excited to combine her two greatest passions: gaming and writing. Shelby is working towards an English degree at THE Ohio State University, and enjoys playing games like God of War and Uncharted when she isn't writing essays. Fun Fact, I didn't play Pokemon or read Harry Potter until I was 16; 16 was a good year! Stay Gold! <3
