The Walking Dead Issue 153 Impressions

By Delaila LugoApril 7, 2016
The Walking Dead’s AMC television show introduced a new villain named Negan in the season finale of season 6 and left viewers with a painful cliff-hanger. What a perfect time for Kirkman to allow Negan to venture off after his unforeseen release from Alexandria’s prison cell. Readers up to date with the comic will revisit just how intimidating Negan can be. If it wasn’t enough for Rick Grime’s group to have to deal with the wrath of The Whisperers, Negan’s liberation brings another threat to the group.

What keeps me engaged in the fairly dragged out TV show adaptation of The Walking Dead, is the intensity the comic book delivers issue after issue. The show conveys its own unique spin to the comic book but doesn’t quite preserve as much intensity and unpredictable outcomes. Negan’s unexpected release from prison brings a deviant satisfaction to readers. Negan gets back his token leather jacket and all of the F bombs and volatile remarks instantly resurface.  His character is so well fleshed out that readers are never sure what his ultimate goal is. One moment he seems like he has become an ally and softens up a bit, the next minute his knife penetrates someones core.

Rick’s victory in the war between the Saviors brought peace to all of the allied communities (The Kingdom, Alexandria and The Hilltop). This includes relief to the Savior’s who weren’t particularly fond living under Negan’s reign. A new demented villain and her group of people unsettle this peace by killing off many significant characters. As a result, the survivors of the group have become over vigilant and distrusting of Rick’s leadership. This causes turmoil within the walls and Rick was in such a pinch that he sought insight from imprisoned Negan. The dialogue between Rick and Negan a few issues back demonstrate Negan as some sort of anti-hero. Then again his motives remain unclear. Will he help Rick fight off The Whisperers? Is he using this moment of vulnerability to regain power over people and their resources? Is Negan Rick’s kin or foe?

On a side note, Eugene is having a confidential conversation over the radio with an anonymous individual who is part of another group. This person expresses reluctance to disclosing information about his group, as Eugene is also suspicious of this unidentified group. What will result of this encounter is far-fetched, but as of now this contact is between the two of them. There is also a bulk of seemingly unimportant characters in the group that Rick, Maggie and Michonne are training for war. This training isn’t going smooth because most of the people are inexperienced in combat and they are already flustered over their recent calamity.

Final Word:
I adore this comic book and almost every issue brings a new depth to this world. Each month I look forward to the new misfortunes and I recommend purchasing The Walking Dead comics as the compendiums release. There is no such thing as “good guys” and “bad guys” in this story. You tend to side with the characters you have journeyed with. If it be Rick Grimes, Negan, the new villain and any other characters associated, each crucial character is DAMAGED. Their behaviors are as understandable as they are maleficent.  I look forward to see Negan and Rick’s next steps in issue 154.

At 2 years old, she was the little sister that was given the unplugged NES controller, and when finally discovering her big brothers trick, she couldn't be stopped. Her parent's would buy almost every single console (NES, Sega Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, etc.), with the expectation that they had to be shared. Finally purchasing her own PlayStation 2 is when she finally accepted gaming as one of her treasured hobbies. Favorite Games: The Last of Us and Bloodborne
