Miitomo’s First Commercial Is a Bit Weirder than Anticipated

By Aaron SandersApril 1, 2016

When some people think of Japan, they usually think about anime, technology, culture, and video games. Unfortunately, some people also think about how bizarre the culture in Japan must be. It doesn’t take much digging to find a slew of quirky videos including commercials and game shows on Youtube from the small island nation. Just typing in “weird Japanese commercial” brings up more than 200,000 videos related to the search terms.

If you thought about searching on Youtube for the new commercial for the smartphone app Miitomo, you may either be in awe or downright confused with what you find. Nintendo doesn’t go as far as some of these more adult-targeted clips on the media streaming giant, but they still bring just enough to make a few raise their eyebrows. Some might even say that ‘it’s so bad, it’s good.’ Take a look for yourself at Miitomo‘s first commercial and you be the judge of that:

Even if you like it or hate it, the video does have some charm. One thing is for certain about this commercial; Nintendo managed to accurately represent just what makes the app Miitomo fun and appealing. Considering that the app has over 500,000 downloads and is on the top of the app store from its launch day alone, Miitomo is doing something right.

If this video got you interested in Nintendo’s first social media application, head on over to the official Miitomo website. There you can find links to download the app to either your iOS or Android platforms.
