How To Raise a Boring Girlfriend  sounds a lot like what it is – a manga about a girlfriend sim. This manga follows Tomoya Aki, an unpopular, socially awkward nerd with an obsession with dating games. He’s also an aspiring game developer who always seems to think with his third head. Eventually he encounters a beautiful girl – the girl of his dreams… as it turns out, he goes to school with her everyday. She just doesn’t stand out when clad in her school uniform. In fact, she’s a total wallflower who isn’t memorable at all. He doesn’t even remember her name. That is when he gets it into his head that she can be the perfect girlfriend… in a dating sim! Now he just needs to gather the rest of his team together, which includes his ex, so he can turn this boring girl into a dream date for nerds everywhere who may one day play his dating sim.

Final Word:

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. The first few chapters are a bit uneventful and remind me of the majority of ‘slice of life’ series that are around. Fortunately, Tomoya’s thoughts are very funny and make up for the more predictable portions of volume 1. I’m reminded of Genshiken although so far there’s no club room and it doesn’t seem like Tomoya has any friends aside from the wallflower and his ex-girlfriend. I’m looking forward to following this series because I do think it will head in a good direction. Fans of stories that follow otaku characters will definitely want to read this.
