PlayStation Plus 12-Month Subscribers in Canada Brace for Price Increase This Summer

Earlier this week, PlayStation announced it was raising the price of the PlayStation 5 (but not the Pro) in several regions. Now, it’s back in the news—this time informing Canadian PlayStation Plus 12-month subscribers that they’re about to pay more for the privilege of using the service, and users have reported receiving emails like the one below about the price increase.

We want to let you know about an upcoming price change to your PlayStation®Plus subscription.

The price for your current PlayStation Plus Extra 12-month subscription will be increased to CAD 189.99. This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.

This price increase will not take effect until your next payment date that occurs on or after June 24, 2025. However, any membership changes you make prior to your next payment, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan based on the new prices. You can change or cancel your subscription at any time; details here. Please find the PlayStation Plus Usage Terms here.

Thanks for your continued support, PlayStation

This price increase is across all tiers of PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and it does not appear to include any new perks. Here’s what the new price structure will look like as of June 2025:

  • PlayStation Plus Essential 12-month subscription: CAD 110 (previously CAD 95)
  • PlayStation Plus Extra 12-month subscription: CAD 190 (previously CAD 155)
  • PlayStation Plus Premium 12-month subscription: CAD 225 (previously CAD 190)

Interestingly, PlayStation has not mentioned this price hike on its official PlayStation Blog. Nor is the United States being affected at this time. But you’ve got to wonder just why this is happening, especially at this time.

This is the second price hike in two years, following an increase in 2023. Many users are expressing frustration, with some stating they will not renew their subscriptions when they expire, while others remain undecided. Others have expressly mentioned that this is why PlayStation Plus pales in comparison to Xbox Game Pass. However, opinions could shift once a highly anticipated title releases later in 2025—a factor that might influence subscription decisions.

I can’t understand why PlayStation thinks that this time is a good time to introduce another price increase, especially two years after already doing so. Their fans can only take so much, I thought PlayStation was for the players. This doesn’t seem like a good deal to me.
