Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Team Break Down The Creation Of The New Console

Starting from scratch to make something better.

The internet and beyond are buzzing about the Nintendo Switch 2. Now, whether that buzz is a “good thing” or not depends on what you’re discussing. However, for now, we’re focusing on the hardware itself. The Switch 2 may look familiar, but it has numerous upgrades to make it superior to the OG Switch, including several fan-requested things. You might wonder, though, “What went into making the new console?” Apparently, a lot. As revealed in an official Nintendo interview, the main dev team trio of Kouichi Kawamoto, Takuhiro Dohta, and Tetsuya Sasaki had actually started work on the system in 2019!

When it came to the “seed-sowing” process of ensuring that they knew what to improve for the Nintendo Switch 2, the team was more than willing to admit that the OG system had its flaws:

“There were times when we wished the Switch system’s processor was faster so that we could provide new and unprecedented gameplay experiences. I think the processor we chose to implement in Switch during its development was the best option at the time. However, as time went on, we began to realize that it didn’t necessarily mean developers could make any kind of game they wanted with it.”

The trio were happy with the processing speeds they were able to get into the Switch 2 and said that the games they showed off in the Nintendo Direct yesterday truly benefitted from that. In a separate part of the interview, the trio further noted that they really did “redesign everything from scratch” versus just making small changes, especially when it came to the Joy-Cons:

“We redesigned everything from scratch for Joy-Con 2, the controllers for this system. Compared to the Joy-Con controllers for Switch, the control sticks are larger and more durable, with smoother movement. We’ve also made Joy-Con 2 bigger to match the larger console. “

The team truly worked hard to deliver a Nintendo Switch 2 experience that would benefit both gamers and developers. We’ll find out on June 5th how well it all works out.
