Has Nintendo Mastered Unreal Engine 4? Shigeru Miyamoto Thinks So!

By Keith MitchellFebruary 11, 2017

It’s not news that the Wii and the Wii U simply weren’t able to run several game engines as well as their counterparts; The Xbox and PlayStation. However, things seem to be a bit different for the Nintendo Switch. Especially when it comes to Unreal Engine 4. For it seems, that according to Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo has mastered the Unreal Engine 4.

Could this actually be true?

“That ease of software development has also been felt by Nintendoʼs internal developers. Also, even though game software developers in the U.S. and E.U. are often said to have superior skills to their Japanese counterparts when it comes to software development techniques, Nintendoʼs software developers have mastered state-of-the-art technologies such as Unreal engine, and their skills can now be compared with those of Western developers. Our developers are more excited than ever to create software.”

That’s definitely good news when it comes to third party support. Especially seeing how the Unreal Engine 3 wasn’t readily supported on the Wii. The Wii U, however, did have several UE4 powered titles. Mighty No. 9, Injustice: Gods Among Us and Mass Effect 3 are a few of those games.

It will be interesting to see the first games that are Unreal Engine 4 powered, coming from the House of Nintendo. Come to think of it, we may have already seen our first UE4 powered game; ARMS. And while that’s just speculation on my part, we really don’t know what game engine is powering that game.

Adding to that is the fact that Nintendo is claiming to have mastered UE4, ARMS would be the perfect example. Fast, agile, and easy on the eyes. I couldn’t think of a better launch title to show off the Switch. Well, other than that Zelda title, that is.
