The Story
We learned a little bit more about The Divine Trees, beings that have becoming living embodiments of the Ten Tails. They are going around and eating chakra so that they can evolve into actual divine trees, and while their main targets are Boruto and Kawaki, they have a strange sensation that they should be devouring other people, such as Naruto, Eida, and others.
We rejoin Sasuke and Boruto in their battle against Code; however, things go south as Sasuke tells Boruto to escape. He is later turned into a tree, much like what happened during the claw grime attack on Konoha. Boruto heads back to Konoha to reunite with Sarada and Sumire, who are still not under the effects of Edia’s Omnipotence jutsu. He has a conversation with them and fills them in on the fate of Sasuke; however, Kawaki senses Boruto’s presence. Before he can take action, Mitsuki’s snake bites Kawaki and heads out in his stead. Still under the assumption that Boruto killed Naruto, Mitsuki attempts to take him down; however, Boruto says some things to him that make him question his very memories.
Speaking of that, Amado ends up thinking about his daughter and how he programmed her DNA into Boruto’s karma, but he doesn’t believe that anymore, as things don’t add up. The physical evidence shows the DNA is in Kawaki’s karma instead, which causes him to question whether or not his memories have been altered. Shikamaru feels the same way, that something is off about his memories, and looks into the situation. When he does, he opens a private line of communication with Boruto and learns the truth!
Before anything can be done, two of the Divine Trees show up in Konoha as they are seeking out Naruto in order to devour him, but someone unexpected stands in their way!
Characters
I wouldn’t say anything that happened in this volume could be considered character development; however, more and more people are opening up the fact that their memories have been altered. Shikamaru is the first to truly understand what’s going on; however, nothing about that is different for him as a character. He has always been analytical and questioned everything, so it was expected of his character to eventually warm up to the idea that his memories were false. Since Amado is the same style of character as Shikamaru in the sense that he analyzes everything, it also made sense for him to consider the possibility.
I did touch upon Boruto becoming more mature in the previous volume, and that continues to hold true here. Even though he has matured, he still cares about people, especially Kawaki. Despite everything that has happened, all he wants to do is slug him in the face for everything that he has done. The fact that Boruto doesn’t want to kill him still speaks to the essence of who he once was as a character while completing his transformation into something more mature. I did ask for a balance between his old and new characters, and it seems we are getting exactly that!
Sarada loves Boruto. Enough said. I don’t care if there was no official confession, but after she lunged at him and hugged him, you know it’s only a matter of time before they get shipped off together. I’m betting it will happen in the series’ epilogue… whenever that may come. I just know that with a series like this, it’ll probably be a long time before we see that… hopefully not 70 volumes from now, but we’ll see.
Final Thoughts
After an excellent start, things did slow down a little bit with the fight between Mitsuki and Boruto serving as the majority of the action; however, while nothing truly new was learned outside of The Divine Trees wanting to eat people for their chakra, we did get some plot advancement with more and more people realizing their memories were fabricated. While no true way to reverse omnipotence has been discovered, it might be countered simply by breaking free from it yourself through rejecting the memories you were given. Every jutsu has a flaw, and this could very well be omnipotence’s flaw.
I don’t know how I feel about those being turned into trees, not dying. The old Naruto manga wasn’t afraid to kill off characters, but it seems that it has gotten a bit softer as of late. Then again, killing off Sasuke would have been a huge moment in the series that might not have sat well with a lot of readers, but Code has been a pretty underwhelming villain. Imagine how much more of a threat he would have seemed had he finished Sasuke off? Instead, he was just turned into a tree to be fed to The Divine Tree. Too many villains these days are busy enacting their carefully laid-out plans rather than causing chaos. I want to see a bit of a punch come back to this franchise as a whole!
Next volume, we see an impending battle with the Divine Trees. Whether or not Boruto will show back up and help out remains to be seen; however, things do look to be getting interesting once again, especially when the one who stood before them looks to stand in their way!
