Revenge of the Savage Planet Review (XSX) – Fun with Goo

By James ClarksonMay 9, 2025
Revenge of the Savage Planet Cover

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a quirky and captivating adventure game that combines exploration, humour, and combat in a beautifully bizarre alien world. Developed by Typhoon Studios and released for multiple platforms, including the Xbox Series X, this title combines vibrant visuals with a light-hearted tone that will leave you both entertained and slightly bewildered.

Game Name: Revenge of the Savage Planet
Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 5, Series X|S (reviewed).
Developer(s): Raccoon Logic Studios Inc.
Publisher(s): Raccoon Logic Studios Inc.
Release Date: 5th May 2025

Set in a remote corner of the universe, Revenge of the Savage Planet casts you as an employee of the Kindred Aerospace, a company known for its ruthless drive to explore new planets at any cost. The story begins with your character crash-landing on an unfamiliar and dangerous world, where you must explore, survive, and discover the planet’s secrets while trying to repair your ship. The premise is fairly simple, but it’s the execution, particularly the humour and atmosphere, that elevates the game to something more memorable.

Gameplay and Exploration

The game’s world is a lush and varied landscape, filled with strange creatures, hostile environments, and hidden treasures. As you traverse the planet, you’ll find yourself jumping between different biomes—dense jungles, volcanic terrains, and icy caverns—all brought to life with bold, colourful visuals. The environments are meticulously designed, and while the world feels vast, it is not without a sense of intimacy. You are always aware that you’re just one tiny part of a much larger, often hostile ecosystem.

Intense Battle

Your primary mission is to explore and gather resources, which will help you repair your ship and advance further into the game. The game’s controls are tight and responsive, with a focus on platforming and puzzle-solving. You will use various gadgets, such as a grappling hook, jetpack, and scanner, to navigate the terrain and solve environmental puzzles. The exploration and discovery aspect is where Revenge of the Savage Planet shines, as the planet feels genuinely alive and full of surprises. Some of the puzzles are clever and require you to think creatively, while others may feel a bit repetitive, but they are generally satisfying to complete.

Combat and Challenges

While exploration is the primary focus, combat also plays an important role in the game. Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter a variety of hostile alien creatures that require quick reflexes and strategic thinking to defeat. The weapons available in the game, ranging from guns to grenades, are fun to use, though they don’t feel as innovative as the exploration mechanics. Combat can feel a little simplistic at times, but the fun lies in experimenting with different tactics, such as using environmental hazards to your advantage.

One aspect that sets Revenge of the Savage Planet apart from other similar titles is its unique tone and sense of humour. The game’s comedic writing is a standout feature. The sarcastic commentary provided by the in-game AI (voiced by the hilariously deadpan Jeff Goldblum) keeps the atmosphere light and adds a layer of absurdity to the otherwise serious task of survival. The humour can be a bit hit or miss, but when it lands, it’s a genuinely charming addition to the experience.

Co-op, Couch, and Online.

Co-op in this game is very well implemented, with both couch and online (with cross-play through Epic Store). Some neat little things that I didn’t expect were when couch co-op starts, you get to choose which side of the screen you get. Unfortunately, it is always vertical,l but I couldn’t imagine playing it horizontally….

Co op Exploration

Also, something that I was not expecting was being able to be on different planets at the same time. Meaning you are not punished if your partner in crime dies. My couch Co-op Partner in crime was my 4-year-old, and trust me, He dies many times-haha.

Graphics and Performance on Xbox Series X

First of all, I’d like to start by saying, I did have an issue when my Xbox was shutting down after the first cut scene. This issue has since been patched thanks to the team’s communication and swiftness to resolve it.

On the Xbox Series X, Revenge of the Savage Planet takes full advantage of the console’s power. The game runs smoothly at 60 frames per second and delivers vibrant, detailed visuals that are particularly impressive in the lush landscapes and alien environments. The art direction plays a significant role in making the world feel fresh and unique, with each biome having its distinct look and feel. The vibrant colour palette and exaggerated character designs add to the game’s whimsical vibe, making the world feel like a living cartoon.

The Xbox Series X also delivers fast load times, which ensures that you spend more time exploring and less time waiting. This quick loading contributes to the overall flow of the game, as you can zip from one area to another without too much interruption.

Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong! & DIAPER

I would be remiss not to add just a little thing about the additional DLC: The Cosmic Hoarder that came with the game. DIAPER is the acronym for Ding Dong Influencer Accelerator Program: Extreme Routine. The Additional missions that come with it are fun, ranging from taking Selfies in certain spots, to seeing what the mysterious substance does to the wildlife & an MTV Cribs parody named STV Cribs. Shama-Lama himself evaluates your “Crib”(base) that you have customised and gives you a score. Simple!

Final Thoughts

Revenge of the Savage Planet is an enjoyable, offbeat adventure that successfully blends exploration, humour, and light combat mechanics. The game’s world is vibrant and full of charm, while the humour keeps things fresh and engaging. While the combat may not be ground-breaking, the overall experience is a fun and satisfying one. For those who enjoy exploratory gameplay with a healthy dose of humour and creativity, Revenge of the Savage Planet is a welcome addition to the Xbox Series X library.

However, it’s not without its flaws. Some players may find the combat to be too simplistic, and there’s a degree of repetition in certain tasks, especially as the game progresses. Despite these minor issues, Revenge of the Savage Planet remains a solid and entertaining experience that will appeal to fans of action-adventure and exploration games. If you’re looking for something light-hearted with a dash of humour and a lot of charm, this game is worth your time.
