Figurine Spotlight: Team Fortress Series 2 Red Heavy from NECA

By Keith MitchellOctober 23, 2014

I’ve been a big fan of Valve’s Team Fortress 2, so much to the point that there was a time in my life when all I did was play the game exclusively. Of course you can imagine that what types of issues can come from that, especially from the wife. So I figured that would stop playing the game in the interest of playing other games and not having my wife strangle me in my sleep. That said I’m still a fan of the series and still sneak in a game or two when nobody is watching. So when I saw Team Fortress Series 2 Red Heavy from NECA, I just had to make it mine. Well him and a few others from the series but today we’re focusing on the Heavy.  Why? Because he’s my favorite, he’s got a huge ass gun and cause he told me to do so.

What better reasons did I need?

What’s in the box?

  • Team Fortress 2 “Heavy” figure (6.5 inches tall, 25 points of articulation)
  • Two pairs of removable hands
  • Heavy Machine gun and Shotgun accessories
  • Team Fortress 2 card that contains a redeemable code for the game

What I liked

This a really nice figure of the Heavy. It’s damn near identical to the in-game version and even includes his machine gun and shotgun but sadly he didn’t some with his trademarked “Sandvich” (next time Neca).  I was also happy to see that NECA really put some thought into the figure and it clearly shows. There are multiple points of articulation (25 points to be exact) that includes the arms, waist, legs and even the ankles, which makes this figure extremely posable. I was also impressed with the paint job and while I did notice a few imperfections they don’t take away from the figure and to be honest you’d be hard pressed to even look for them. The face even has his 5 o’ clock shadow, that’s attention to detail for you.

The Heavy  also feels really solid, unlike some other figures I’ve tried out, I could drop him (Not that I would) and wouldn’t have to worry about him falling apart.

What I didn’t like

While it’s not impossible to pose the Heavy with his machine gun held, it is pretty damned hard as the gun makes him top heavy depending on how you pose him so an included stand would have been nice. I also had a hard time removing the hands from stem that holds it in place and instead of removing the hand I would always remove the arm from the ball joint down. I understand why they did what they did but it still doesn’t make changing the hands any easier. I would have also liked to have seen some battle damage as well, some cuts or bruises and perhaps a bandage or two. This man is in a battle and should show as such.

There’s also no hat! I know this is silly but this is a Team Fortress 2 item after all. And Team Fortress 2 and hats go hand in hand! I need a HAT!

You can order your very own Heavy (Red or Blue) via Amazon.com. Sadly you can not contact NECA directly as this particular figurine has been out for some time and is now discontinued. Still last I checked there were tons available on Amazon and they come in at just under $40, which is a steal compared to some other variations of the Heavy which are just under $100 or more. You can’t go wrong here.

What sick man sends babies to fight me?

All in all though I feel that NECA has done an amazing job of bringing over a popular Team Fortress 2 favorite and creating a well crafted figurine. Tons of articulation, great attention to detail and priced just right. The Heavy would be a great attention to anyone’s collection or even a good combat buddy that you can stick on your desk, bookstand or wherever else you put your spoils of war at.

+ Lots of articulation
+ Very detailed
+ Won’t cost you an arm and a leg to pickup

– No stand included
– Hands are a pain to remove from the stem
– Would have liked to have seen some battle damage
– Where’s my hat at?
